Sotto entry in FIBA WCQ uncertain

THE availability of Filipino NBA prospect Kai Sotto for Gilas Pilipinas in the 2023 FIBA World Cup qualifiers first window in February next year is still unknown.

CJ Bruton, Sotto’s coach in Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s National Basketball League (NBL), said he, the team management and Sotto have yet to discuss the matter.

NBL would be in the middle of its 2021-2022 season in the February window of the qualifiers.

“That’s something I haven’t discussed yet, and that’s something probably over my head at this point in time — that’s something that I’ll need to take up the chain, and that’s a question that needs to be asked to someone higher than me,” Bruton said in an online press conference hosted by Tap Sports.

Sotto, though, is committed to Gilas, especially when the national team plays in the 2023 World Cup which the Philippines will be co-hosting with Japan and Indonesia.

The 19-year-old and 7-foot-3 Sotto said that whatever he’s doing now in the NBL is preparing him for his NBA dream and for the national team.

“The goal for me every day is to be 0.0001-percent better every single day, trying to make the most out of every day to get better and stronger,” said Sotto, who registered 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds for Gilas in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament last July.

“This year, I’m just really focused on developing, and helping my team win every time I step on the court. I know when I’m doing that, I’m also preparing for 2023 (World Cup),” added Sotto, who missed Adelaide’s first two games due to knee soreness.
