disabled people in cov say they're 'scared to go out' as readers back pavement parking ban

People have been having their say on whether pavement parking should be banned in Coventry

Fining drivers who park on pavements would ‘make a fortune’ up Foleshill Road say readers, who have cautiously backed the idea. We asked readers if they wanted to see a pavement parking ban in Coventry after campaigners called for a similar move in Birmingham.

It comes after parking on the pavement has been banned in parts of Scotland, with drivers flouting the new rule fined up to £100.

And in Coventry the issue has proved to be almost as divisive as Brexit with 56 per cent of people voting in favour with 43 per cent against.

Plenty of people also had their say on the issue. Blueblue123 said: “Enforce it, then spend the first week up Foleshill – will make a fortune!”

And oscarlesco explained why a ban would make a difference to disabled people: “I use a mobility scooter and constantly get held up by cars, not only parked partially on the pavement but also sticking out of gardens that are too short to accommodate them. I have often had to use the road to get past these obstacles, which of course, is dangerous. I welcome a statutory £100 fine for the offenders, sooner the better.”

And cessna152 added: “I am partially sighted, if I had a pound for every car I walked into when on the pavement and for the abuse I get from the selfish, arrogant, ignorant, self-centred, abusive car drivers I would be very rich. Instead I’m frightened to go out now as it is too dangerous.”

But Covlegend said: “Build adequate car parks down every street first before even considering such a ban. Forcing cars to park in the road opposite each other will make the roads impassable.”

And petenephilim added: “If everyone was to park fully on the road many roads would not be suitable for refuse lorries and ambulances to get down.”
