Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Keanu Reeves Casting Foreshadowed by Part 2 Poster
Just recently, it was revealed that Keanu Reeves would be voicing the role of Shadow the Hedgehog in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The exciting news has led to some fans noticing how a poster released in 2021 for Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s marketing foreshadowed the actor’s casting.
As the second Sonic film was hyping the arrival of Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba), a poster was shared on the official X account for Sonic the Hedgehog. Taking inspiration from the red pill and blue pill decision from The Matrix, a movie starring Keanu Reeves, the poster featured a red quill and a blue quill, noting, “The choice is yours.” The caption of the post further added, “Which one do you think Keanu would pick?”

As fans now know, the choice is neither, as Reeves went with the black quill. Fans have started to notice the 2021 poster, with some commenting on how it seemingly foreshadowed Reeves officially becoming a part of the franchise with the next sequel. As one post said in response, “Dang, y’all played us with the long con. Respect.” Sharing the post, another X user said, “You slick bastards, ” while another stated, “Just noticed that the Sonic films was referencing Keanu which is foreshadowing.”
Did the Poster Foreshadow Keanu’s Casting?
At the very least, this makes for an interesting coincidence. More likely, the Matrix-style poster was not made as a way of alluding to Reeves’ casting years into the future for the next sequel. The poster was shared in December 2021, which just so happened to be when Reeves’ The Matrix Resurrections was released in theaters. The spoof poster was most likely a reference to that film’s release, given how Sonic the Hedgehog 2 didn’t hit theaters until April 2022.
