Social housing to get budget funding boost
Four days out from the state budget today, funding for housing top of the agenda. There’s no doubt we’re deeply aware and cognizant of the pressures that are in the current housing market. The state said to add $843,000,000 to its social housing budget, increasing its target from 4000 to 5000 homes. To date, hundreds of millions of dollars have been to invest in refurbishing existing stock and to date 1500 homes have had their life extended and of course in this budget. We’re providing additional funds to extend the life further. What’s really important about this announcement is that we provide more affordable homes for people to transition out of social housing into the affordable rental market and then progress their way through to home ownership. 125 homes a month are currently being built or renovated to help boost the social housing pool. These three homes here in Cloverdale, the latest edition, the trio costing around $1,000,000 to build with families to move in from next week. 114 new homes in over 7 years under Labour. They’ve completely failed on delivering social housing in this state. We need to maintain a really strong level of social housing investment, no matter what the cycles that are happening in the private market. Emma Griffiths 9 News.
