As war continues to rage in the Middle East one Wexford councillor has suggested his local authority could do its bit for the people of Palestine. At the April meeting of Wexford County Council (WCC), Councillor Leonard Kelly came up with what he believed would be a suitable response to a war which has resulted in over 33,000 fatalities at the time of writing.
“It seems like we’re powerless, and I have had people asking me what can we do,” he said. “One thing which was suggested was, as a council, could we look at doing an audit of the purchasing accounts in the council to see what we buy from Israel. Could we look at boycotting whatever goods we purchase from Israel?
“Because this conflict is going to continue, it’s now a famine situation, we have no control over it but we can look at an old Irish methodology of turning our back on things we disagree with.”
