There are currently five reports of criminal offenses against persons who were involved in talent show The Voice of Holland. This is reported by the Utrecht police. In addition, about twenty reports were made of inappropriate behavior and ‘possible sexually transgressive behaviour’ by persons involved in the TV program.
It has not been disclosed who the charges were made against. Nor about who the reports are about. It was already known that there were complaints against (ex-)jury members Marco Borsato and Ali B., against band leader Jeroen Rietbergen and against director Martijn N. This concerns cases of rape (twice against Ali B.) or assault (against Rietbergen and Martin N.).
According to lawyers Carry and Geert-Jan Knoops of Marco Borsato, the report against the singer is not part of the investigation into The Voice. “We received confirmation from the Public Prosecution Service this morning.” The police would not say anything more about it. The complaint against Borsato was already known before the drama surrounding The Voice and comes from an ex-employee of the singer.
One complaint against Ali B. is also separate from The Voice, the Justice Department in North Holland announced earlier. But it is not known whether this was included in these five declarations.
Ali B., Borsato and Rietbergen deny the allegations, although Rietbergen has admitted to have acted across borders.
In recent weeks, dozens of victims of possible sexual abuse and/or unwanted sexual behavior have reported to the police. The reason is the episode of the online program Boos about sexual abuse in the TV program The Voice of Holland and the call from the police and the Public Prosecution Service to possible victims to report.
Many more calls with vice teams
The police find that The Voice has ‘started a movement’. A lot more people are calling the vice squads now. Most phone calls have nothing to do with The Voice. These are reports of assault, rape or sexual abuse that happened years ago.
The police make a distinction between reports and reports. In principle, the first does not lead to a criminal investigation. The second may lead to an investigation led by the Public Prosecution Service.
Police are still investigating all charges. It is therefore not yet certain that it will lead to a lawsuit in all cases.
RTL has since removed The Voice from television. It is still unclear how to proceed with the program.
