'Small Black Rat' Remains Found in Sliced White Bread Prompts Recall of 104,000 Packs and Refunds to Customers

Rat remains have caused a bread brand in Japan to recall its products.
According to the BBC, Pasco Shikishima Corporation had to recall 104,000 packs of sliced white bread and issue refunds after black rat parts were found in at least two packs.
The outlet reports that Pasco is one of Japan’s well-known bread brands, filling out the shelves in supermarkets and being the go-to brand for many households in the country.
PEOPLE has contacted Pasco Shikishima Corporation for further comment, but they did not immediately respond.
“It has recently come to light that a foreign object (a part of what appears to be a small animal) has been mixed into the ‘Super Mature 5-Slice’ produced by Shikishima Baking Co., Ltd.’s Pasco Tokyo-Tama Factory,” the company wrote in a statement on Tuesday, May 7 on their website. “We have completed the recall of the products that were contaminated with foreign substances, but as a precaution, we have recalled the following products that were produced on the same line, and have suspended the line for the time being in order to investigate the cause and strengthen countermeasures. Masu.”
According to the statement, there have been no reports of anyone becoming sick after the discovery.

“We deeply apologize for the inconvenience and inconvenience caused to our customers, business partners and all concerned parties,” they added. “We will strive to further strengthen our quality control system and take all possible measures to ensure that such a situation does not occur again in the future. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.”
Meanwhile, a representative from the company told NBC News that the bread had been contaminated with a “small black rat.”
While it’s currently unknown how the remains of the rat got into the products, the company website allows customers to fill out a form and apply for refunds.
According to the BBC, the company’s products are exported to many countries such as the US, Australia, China, Singapore and more.
