Tottenham could turn to Julen Lopetegui or Roberto De Zerbi to be their next manager
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy can cross another name of his new manager short list after frontrunner Arne Slot committed his future to Feyenoord. The 44-year-old was seen as the firm favourite for the vacancy, with his agent even scheduling a meeting on Wednesday with the recently-crowned Dutch champions to reportedly discuss his exit. However, it’s now clear to see talks were very positive for Feyenoord instead.
In a Thursday morning press conference, Slot has been quoted in AD saying: “I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other clubs’ interest in me. Although I am thankful, my wish is to stay at Feyenoord and continue working on what we created last year.
“There is not – and there has not been – transfer conversation and yesterday’s meeting was exclusively for an extension. All talks with the club have always been only in that sense. I’m looking forward to next season with Feyenoord.”
With Slot now joining Julian Nagelsmann, Vincent Kompany and Xabi Alonso in being out of the running for the Tottenham job, football.london has compiled all the likely targets remaining for Levy and the new director of football to choose from.
Luis Enrique
Former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique remains available following his dismissal from Spain after the 2022 World Cup. Chelsea had placed him on their short list and conducted several meetings before it was decided to look elsewhere.
Tottenham have shown some interest in the 48-year-old, but the only concern is that he is quite similar to Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, and the two tenures for that experienced duo in north London did not go very well.
Ruben Amorim
After facing his Sporting CP side twice in the Champions League, it’s fair to say that Tottenham have serious admiration for Ruben Amorim.
The 38-year-old, who Chelsea also enquired about, is considered to be a manager with huge potential and if appointed would be a good man to lead the Tottenham rebuild.
Roberto De Zerbi
Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi has done an excellent job this season on the south coast after taking over from Graham Potter in September 2022.
Understandably he is well-liked at Spurs and following a draw with Manchester City, the Seagulls will now compete in the Europa League next season, making it highly unlikely De Zerbi leaves the club to join Spurs, who may not even be able to offer any European football.
Ryan Mason
Interim manager Ryan Mason placing himself in the frame for the permanent job brought laughs from certain people across the footballing world, but the former Premier League midfielder does have a good case for the role.
If anyone knows the club and the current state it’s in, it is Mason. Granted he doesn’t have the experience that will appease many, but at this moment in time, Tottenham isn’t exactly the most attractive project.
Appointing Mason could be damaging but he has shown tactical awareness to change shape and make important decisions, he just needs to slightly refine a few things and then he could be a serious contender.
Brendan Rodgers
The former Leicester City manager has been linked with Tottenham on numerous occasions over the last few years and now that he is out of a job, he could finally complete the move.
Unfortunately, his spell at the Foxes could be tainted if they are relegated from the Premier League this season, but he is an experienced manager who is more than capable of getting a tune out of the Spurs players.
Julen Lopetegui
A surprise name on this list, considering he has comfortably kept Wolves in the Premier League, is Julen Lopetegui. The former Sevilla boss faces an uncertain future at Molineux after promises regarding big signings were broken which is now forcing him to work within a revamped transfer structure.
Remaining at Wolves is certainly possible, but there does appear to be some unrest which Tottenham could take advantage of. In his short time based in the West Midlands, Lopetegui gave Wolves an identity and made their home ground a fortress, considering they were in a relegation battle, beating Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool on home soil.
But maybe recent experience for Spurs of appointing another former Wolves boss may make them think again about Lopetegui.
