A Ho Chi Minh City architecture student has turned his love for a traditional village of silk in southern Vietnam into a graduation project that was recently honored with a Loa Thanh Award.

'Lanh My A Museum' by Pham Duy Tan, a student from the University of Architecture Ho Chi Minh City, and 'The Corner of the Backyard -- Silent Spaces along the Huong Vinh Canal' by Le Quoc from the University of Sciences - Hue University were given the Loa Thanh Award on December 27 in Hanoi.

The Loa Thanh Award is a prestigious prize honoring the best architecture and construction students with excellent graduation projects across the country.

The award is jointly organized annually by the Ministry of Construction, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, the Vietnam Construction Association, and the Vietnam Association of Architects.

Pham Duy Tan came up with the idea of designing an architectural project for a museum promoting a traditional village after paying a visit to Tan Chau District in the Mekong Delta province of An Giang.

Having a chance to personally experience Lanh My A silk, whose nickname is 'the Queen of silk,' the Ho Chi Minh City student wanted to do something to restore the traditional village that was once famous for making silk in Tan Chau.

In preparation for the architecture graduation project, Tan chose to live with the local community.

He got to know about the characteristics of Tan Chau silk through Tam Lang, the last artisan in the village.

Tan tried his best to figure out the project, 'Lanh My A Museum,' with the support of architect Dam Huynh Quoc Vu after returning from the village.

“I want to tell a story of the conservation process relating to the southern region’s traditional village by the language of architecture,” explained Tan.

“I would like to help others to understand the silk village’s history with its ups and downs in various periods."

Apart from the two first prizes, 15 second prizes, 20 third prizes, and 20 consolation prizes were also presented to other outstanding students at the Loa Thanh awards ceremony in Hanoi.
