UnitedHealth hackers accessed system days before ransomware attack

Hackers reportedly gained access to the systems of UnitedHealth Group’s (NYSE:UNH) Change Healthcare unit nine days before they launched a ransomware attack.

The hackers, believed to be affiliated with ransomware group ALPHV, were able to access the system on Feb. 12 by using comprised credentials. Multifactor authentication had not been enabled on the app the hackers used to gain access, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited a person familiar with the investigation into cyberattack.

The source told the Journal that the ransomware group was moving laterally within the Change network from Feb. 12 until the ransomware attack on Feb. 21. The Journal noted that the group may have been able to steal “significant” amounts of data from the system during that time.

The Journal said that Change processes around 15B transactions per year and comes into contact with around 30% of the nation’s medical records.

UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty is expected to testify about the cyberattack before a US House committee on May 1.
