annie awards 2024: spider-man: across the spider-verse wins best film, dominates list
At UCLA’s Royce Hall, the 51st Annie Awards witnessed the triumph of Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, securing Best Feature and six additional awards. With a total of seven wins, mirroring its predecessor Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it emerges as a frontrunner for the upcoming Animated Feature Oscar.
A Legacy of Success
Since the inception of the Best Animated Feature Oscar category in 2002, 14 out of 21 Annie Awards’ top feature winners, and seven out of the past 11, have gone on to claim the coveted Academy Award. Last year, Netflix’s Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro followed this trend, triumphing at both award shows.
Spider-Man’s Sweep
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse clinched victories in Directing, Music, Production Design, Character Design, FX, and Editing categories, solidifying its dominance at the Annies.
Other Film Winners
Gkids’ The Boy and the Heron and Netflix’s Nimona also secured two awards each. Robot Dreams from Arcadia Motion Pictures won Best Feature – Independent. These films, alongside Disney/Pixar’s Elemental, will compete for the Academy Award next month.
Notable Absences and Surprises
This year marked the absence of Disney and Pixar films from the top prize category at the Annies. Notably, Elemental went home empty-handed, along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Toho’s anime Suzume, which were also nominated for Best Feature.
TV Category Highlights
Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai dominated the TV categories, securing six wins, including Writing, Editing, FX, Character Design, Production Design, and Best TV/Media for Mature Audiences. Disney Television Animation’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Visions were the only other titles to win multiple prizes in the small-screen categories.
