Should Quebec catch up to other provinces and raise speed limits on highways?
Should speed limits on Quebec highways look more like this? It already does look like that in some highways in most provinces across Canada, including Ontario. Why? Well, they say it’s common sense. Is it though? Most Quebec drivers already cruise over the speed limit. In fact, 2/3 of them admitted it in an SAAQ poll. And only those going way over the speed limit usually get tickets. Some Quebecers like the idea of raising the speed limit outside of the city. Yeah, why not? Everybody run out, 210 others not so much. No, it is dangerous. No one’s really pushing for it to happen here. At least not yet. Certainly not Quebec’s government. The idea that they would make highways more dangerous is the obvious downside. About 1/3 of fatal collisions that happened in Quebec last year were caused by reckless driving and speeding. Would increasing speed limits mean more deaths on highways? Hard to say. We looked at Ontario’s numbers and Hwy. Dots did start going up after they started raising speed limits in 2022. But speeding is just one of several causes behind those deaths. So we can’t definitively see there’s a causal link there in Ontario called the speed limit changes a success. But Quebec says it’s thinking about a plethora of factors, including the impact on road safety, user behavior, the immediate environment around the road, environmental concerns of travel, traffic, flow. Are we collectively ready for that? Another thing, the CAA is worried about potholes. It seems the roads are quite a bit different between Ontario and and Quebec. What do you think?
