Several Joburg areas to be hit by 7-day long water disruption in February

Johannesburg Water will be showing no love in several parts of the Joburg as it plans a water disruption for up to seven days next month (February).

AREAS AFFECTED BY THE WATER DISRUPTION

Affected areas include Aeroton, Ormonde, Ormonde View, Orlando East, Orlando West, Diepkloof, Diepkloof Extension, Diepkloof Extensions 1 and 10, Baragwanath Hospital, and Doctor Matsheke Hospital.

According to Johannesburg Water, the water disruption will commence on 2 February at 10:00 (pre-shutdown activities will begin on 31 January) and end on 9 February at 20:00 (post-shutdown activities will end on 10 February).

WHY WATER SUPPLY WILL BE AFFECTED IN SOME AREAS?

The reason for the water disruption is due to a structural assessment and inspection of the reservoir and cleaning. The impact on the customer will be low pressure to no water (particularly in high-lying areas).

Johannesburg Water has indicated that an alternative water supply will be provided to deserving areas. “Water tankers will be provided to high-lying areas, as and when necessary,” the entity said.

SOWETO RESIDENTS URGED TO USE WATER SPARINGLY

Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water issued another warning to Soweto residents to reduce water consumption. “Johannesburg Water urges Soweto residents to curb consumption. To ensure sustainability and a steady supply of water, the entity appeals to Soweto to use water sparingly,” the entity cautioned.

TIPS TO REDUCE WATER CONSUMPTION

Here are simple water-saving habits to implement into your daily routine

  • Do not leave taps dripping
  • wash your car on the grass with grey water as this will water your lawn at the same time
  • Shorten your showering time
  • Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth
  • Take shallow baths and avoid filling your bath to a depth greater than 100mm
  • Reuse grey water to wash your garden or pot plants
  • Fix all leaking plumbing features in your house
