Da’Vine Joy Randolph gave a shout out to the ‘incredible’ women in her life as she accepted her Best Supporting Actress win at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards on Sunday.

The actress, 37 – who was the recipient of the honor for her role as Mary Lamb in The Holdovers – was welcomed with cheers from the A-list attendees as she took to the stage at The Barker Hanger in Santa Monica.

While cradling the award in the crook of her arm, the star pulled out a piece of paper with a speech that she had penned shortly before the ceremony.

At one point, she shed the spotlight onto the women in her life that have helped her be where she is today. ‘To play a woman that is so many things to see themselves as a gift.’

‘And I want to have a moment to thank the incredible women in my life who have made me the artist I am today.’

Randolph continued, ‘I thank my mother, for teaching me that hard work and tenacity pays off.’

‘My Aunt Shirley, who taught me how to be fabulous. My Aunt Gwenny for teaching me how to tell the perfect joke.’

‘Thank you to the teachers who have guided me through the years, and especially thanks to the women in the industry who have fiercely supported me. Thank you so much!’

Also during her speech, Da’Vine took time to pay a tribute to the other women who were nominated in the same category, including Julianne Moore, Emily Blunt, Danielle Brooks and America Ferrera.

‘To my fellow nominees, you worked continuously to push the bounds what it is in this medium. And I’m so honored to be considered amongst you.’

The Holdovers was nominated for a total of eight awards during the event, including Best Picture and Best Comedy.

Along with Randolph, her co-stars Paul Giamatti won the award for Best Actor while Dominic Sessa was the recipient of the Best Young Actor/Actress Award.

Earlier last week, The Lost City actress garnered a Golden Globe win for her performance in the project.

She notably played the role of Mary Lamb – a bereaved mother and cook at the Barton Academy boarding school.

While talking about her character with The Guardian, Da’Vine expressed that, ‘There’s a fragility, a tenderness; she’s a born leader, a caregiver, a nurturer.’

‘This idea that she’s flawed, but there’s still great love and hope within her, whether she’s aware of it or not.’

She also revealed an important lesson that she learned from fellow actor Eddie Murphy – whom she previously worked alongside with in the movie titled, Dolemite Is My Name?

‘I think to pace yourself, which I definitely applied here – don’t blow your wad. So in doing all this funny stuff, when he’s off-screen, he’s quiet, reserving that energy.’

‘And then I did the opposite. I stayed happy, happy, happy off-screen to be able to go in there and be more serious,’ the star added.

In regards to her recent wins amid the busy awards season, she also opened up about handling the spotlight and stated, ‘The schedule is overwhelming, but it’s an overwhelming joy as well.’

‘This is what actors dream of. So I dare not complain. I’m just taking it day by day. That’s all you can do.’

Shortly before the Critics Choice Awards commenced on Sunday, Randolph stepped onto the red carpet to show off her glamorous look.

She donned a figure-hugging, black dress that contained a velvet, corset bodice as well as a mermaid-styled skirt that contained sparkling embellishments.

Dramatic sleeves partially covered her arms and the actress added a pair of dangly earrings as well as a glittering silver necklace for a finishing touch.

‘I’m a fashion girl. I love the details,’ Da’Vine recently told People. ‘For every red carpet I’m doing mood boards, I’m pulling hair references, nails references, makeup references, different swatches for a wardrobe.’
