Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Jawan’ slips to 6th spot as ‘The Nun 2’, ‘A Haunting in Venice’ top US box office

Shah Rukh Khan’s action-drama ‘Jawan’ which debuted at the number 4 spot on the list of highest-earning films at the US box office, slipped two spots to number 6 on its second weekend.

According to industry watchers, the film earned an estimated USD 2.5 million over the weekend, taking its total box office collection in the US to an impressive USD 9-10 million. The film is now aiming to overtake SRK’s January release ‘Pathaan’, which scored a USD 17 million haul.

The Atlee directorial is on a record-breaking spree at the domestic and international box office. The film has earned an estimated Rs 800 crore worldwide, which converts to approximately USD 96 million. All eyes are now set on the box office this week to see how long the movie takes to cross the USD 100 million mark globally. Should it pass the milestone, it will mark Shah Rukh’s second film of the year to achieve this feat. ‘Pathaan’ concluded its global run with an estimated USD 130 million lifetime collection.

Currently, Aamir Khan’s 2016 film ‘Dangal’, which grossed around USD 250 million globally (most of it coming from China) is the highest-earning Hindi film at the international box office.

Meanwhile, ‘The Nun 2’ and ‘A Haunting in Venice’ virtually tied for the No. 1 spot in U.S. and Canadian theatres over the weekend. In its second weekend, ‘The Nun’ sequel, a spinoff from the ‘Conjuring’ franchise grossed USD 14.7 million, taking its domestic total up to USD 56.5 million and worldwide numbers to USD 158.8 million.

Very close behind was Kenneth Branagh’s ‘A Haunting in Venice’. The film that is the director-actor’s third Agatha Christie adaptation following 2017’s ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and 2022’s ‘Death on the Nile’, opened with a collection of USD 14.5 million. After the successful run of ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ (USD 352.8 million worldwide against a production budget of USD 55 million) and the fall in numbers for ‘Death on the Nile’ (USD 137.3 million against a USD 90 million budget), the poor start for ‘A Haunting in Venice’ raises doubts about the future of the franchise. The 20th Century Studios film, released by the Walt Disney Co., grossed USD 22.7 million internationally and it cost less than its predecessor, carrying a production budget of about USD 60 million.

The other films raking in the big bucks at the US box office this week include ‘The Equalizer 3’, starring Denzel Washington, which dropped to third place with a collection of USD 7.2 million. In three weeks, the film grossed USD 73.7 million domestically and USD 132.4 million worldwide. Fourth place went to ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3’ with USD 4.7 million in its second weekend of release. It’s grossed USD 18.5 million domestically.

It was one of the quietest weekends in movie theatres this year, as Hollywood – which has spent much of the last two weeks promoting its films at the Venice, Telluride and Toronto film festivals – treads water in between the summer smashes of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” and awaits its top fall movies. Some of those, like ‘Dune: Part Two’, have already postponed until next year due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

One anticipated fall film, Sony’s ‘Dumb Money’, opted for a platform release, debuting in eight theatres over the weekend before expanding next weekend and going wide Sept. 29. The film, a rollicking dramatization of the GameStop stock frenzy, grossed USD 217,000, for a per-location average of about USD 27,000.

And ‘Barbie’ also remains in the picture. For the ninth straight weekend, Greta Gerwig’s box-office sensation ranked in the top five films. It added $4 million to bring its domestic total to USD 625 million and its global haul to USD 1.42 billion. Meanwhile, ‘Oppenheimer’ reached USD 912.7 million, making it the highest-grossing biopic ever, passing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to Comscore.

1. “The Nun II,” $14.7 million.

2. “A Haunting in Venice,” $14.5 million.

3. “The Equalizer 3,” $7.2 million.

4. “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” $4.7million.

5. “Barbie,” $4 million.

6. “Jawan,” $2.5 million.

8. “Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story,” $2.4 million.
