OnePlus 12R uses slower UFS3.1 storage, not UFS4.0; OnePlus apologises for ‘error’

OnePlus 12R

The OnePlus 12R uses UFS3.1 storage across both its variants — 8GB/128GB, 16GB/256GB — and not UFS4.0 as advertised at launch and product listing pages. OnePlus president and COO Kinder Liu has acknowledged the “error” and apologised for it, through a blog post.

Controversy began when some reviewers and early buyers spotted the mistake when they found benchmark apps like AnTuTu reporting less than expected results in case of the 12R’s 16GB/256GB model which was previously claimed to use faster UFS4.0 storage by OnePlus. The apps were however reporting UFS3.1 speeds. Obviously, it created quite a storm and buzz on social media.

Forcing OnePlus to look into it —probably— and coming out with a statement essentially backtracking on its previously advertised numbers.

“Due to an error, we stated that the storage enhanced by Trinity Engine would be UFS 4.0 in some variants,” Liu wrote, adding “I can now confirm that the storage in all variants of the OnePlus 12R is still enhanced by Trinity Engine but is actually UFS 3.1.”

The OnePlus president and COO has tried to further pacify buyers —both existing and new— saying the company tested all the performance gains that it promised at launch including fast app launch times and keeping applications locked open for up to 72 hours using UFS 3.1 storage and so, presumably, everything should work the way it was publicised.

“I can also confirm that the OnePlus 12R was fully certified by TUV SUD using UFS 3.1 memory, and, as a result, it is still certified to remain fluent for 48 months,” Liu wrote, adding “on behalf of our team, I’d like to apologise to everyone for this error.”
