Senior Queensland police officer 'disappointed' by allegations officer snuck daughter over NSW border

A senior Queensland police officer in charge of a region that monitors the New South Wales border says he is “extremely disappointed” by allegations a senior constable snuck his daughter into Queensland.

An internal investigation has since begun into the incident and the officer has been stood down from official duties in the road policing unit in the Brisbane suburb of Boondall.

The man’s 20-year-old daughter was issued with a $4,135 fine last Wednesday and has been placed in hotel quarantine.

Police sources have told the ABC the senior constable drove to the Gold Coast in uniform on a police motorbike to escort his daughter over the Queensland-NSW border when allegedly did not have a valid border pass.

They said police at the border became suspicious and reported the alleged breach, prompting an internal investigation.

Police sources told the ABC the senior constable could be charged with criminal offences such as corrupt conduct and misconduct in public office, which carries up to seven years in prison.

Sources said the mobile phones of the officer and his daughter had been seized as part of the investigation.

While it is unknown whether the officer was on duty at the time, police sources said he was not acting in official capacity when he re-entered Queensland.

Police motorbikes are fitted with GPS systems — technology which will likely form part of the internal investigation.

Premier says allegations ‘concerning’

Speaking on ABC Radio Brisbane, Queensland Police Acting Chief Superintendent Rhys Wildman described the alleged breach as “extremely disappointing”.

He said community confidence around border operations was vital.

“What I will say, although I can’t comment on the investigation directly, I can say that this highlights the rigour with which our border operations currently operate,” Acting Chief Superintendent Wildman said.

“So with anyone that crosses over the borders, those enquiries aren’t completed and just because somebody gets across the border doesn’t necessarily mean that they get a free ride.”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the allegations were concerning.

“Of course it’s concerning you want everyone to do the right thing,” she said.

‘They’ll be held accountable’

Acting Chief Superintendent Wildman said once people cross the border for a purpose, “further follow up investigations are made”.

“We quite often pick up individuals that do provide a version of events which allows them entry into Queensland based on the information provided to officers on those border checkpoints,” he said.

“However once they’re in Queensland, further follow up investigations are made. And we have had cases, such as this one, where enforcement action is taken.

“So it’s really important that we focus on that these are the actions of individuals, not groups, not organisations or industries.

“These are individuals making poor choices and they’ll be held accountable for their actions.”
