Un senador estadounidense republicano que se opone a que Estados Unidos brinde más fondos a Ucrania argumentó en una conferencia de seguridad internacional el domingo que el paquete estancado en el Congreso no “cambiará fundamentalmente la realidad” en la zona en conflicto y que Rusia cuenta con un incentivo para negociar la paz.

El presidente ucraniano Volodymyr Zelenskyy, la vicepresidenta estadounidense Kamala Harris y otros han abogado por la aprobación de los 60.000 millones de dólares en ayuda en la Conferencia de Seguridad de Múnich, que coincidió con la retirada de soldados de Ucrania de la ciudad oriental de Avdiivka después de meses de intensos combates.

Pero el senador JD Vance, republicano de Ohio y aliado de Donald Trump, dijo que “el problema en Ucrania… es que no hay un punto final claro” y que Estados Unidos no fabrica suficientes armas para apoyar guerras en Europa del este, Oriente Medio y “potencialmente una contingencia en el este de Asia”.

El presidente de la Cámara de Representantes, Mike Johnson, insiste en que no lo “apurarán” a aprobar el paquete de ayuda exterior de 95.300 millones de dólares del Senado que incluye ayuda para Ucrania, a pesar del apoyo abrumador de la mayoría de los demócratas y casi la mitad de los republicanos.

Si el paquete se aprueba, “eso no cambiará fundamentalmente la realidad en el campo de batalla”, argumentó Vance, señalando la limitada capacidad de fabricación de armas estadounidense.

”¿Podemos enviar el nivel de armamento que hemos enviado durante los últimos 18 meses?”, preguntó. “Simplemente no podemos. No importa cuántos cheques emita el Congreso de Estados Unidos, estamos limitados en eso”.

“Creo que lo que es razonable lograr es cierta paz negociada”, señaló, argumentando que Rusia, Ucrania, Europa y Estados Unidos tienen todos un incentivo para sentarse a la mesa ahora y que la guerra de dos años terminará en algún momento en una paz negociada.
