Sen. Nancy Binay bares possible 2025 bid for Makati City mayor

MANILA, Philippines — “Graduating” Senator Nancy Binay on Thursday said she is seriously contemplating running for Makati City mayor in the 2025 midterm elections.

In a press conference,  Sen. Binay said there is a 70 percent chance that she will seek the mayoral post and addressed the possibility of a showdown with her brother-in-law, Makati 2nd Dist. Rep. Luis Campos Jr.

Campos’ wife, incumbent Mayor Abby Binay, in January, said there’s only one person whom she trusts to be her successor, none other than [her] husband.

“Kapag talagang sinabi ko na tatakbo ako, na-input na ‘yun, malungkot man pero at the end of the day kailangan what will be good for Makati ang consideration. Kung kailangan i-sacrifice yang in-law relationship para sa mga kababayan ko sa Makati, we have to sacrifice,” she said.

(Once I say that I would really run, it’s already an input. It may be sad, but at the end of the day, what should be considered is what’s good for Makati. If I need to sacrifice my in-law relationship for  the people in Makati, we have to sacrifice.)

“Kung isang bala ‘yung future plans [ko], ang trajectory nya ay talagang papunta sa Makati. Siguro ngayon 70-30 kasi syempre… ayun na nga, palapit nang palapit [ang eleksyon],” said Binay.

(If my future plan is a bullet, its trajectory is really going to Makati. Maybe it’s now 70-30 because, of course, the election is getting nearer.)

Asked what would “inspire” her to push through with her plan, Sen. Binay recalled how her parents, as well as her siblings, have taken care of Makati.

“Syempre ang consideration ko is parang at the end of the day hindi ko pwedeng pabayaan yung mga kababayan ko sa Makati. Kailangan ang mag aalaga sa kanila ay kayang ibigay ang pag aalagang ibinigay ng mga Binay,” she added.

(Of course, my consideration is that at the end of the day, I cannot neglect the people of Makati. It is necessary that the one who will take care of them will be able to provide the care provided by the Binays.)

Makati City has been a bailiwick of Binays since the late 1980s.
