At least 16 children have been rushed to hospital after suffering suspected carbon monoxide poisoning while at an ice skating rink in Adelaide.

The 16 children were taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning after attending IceArenA on James Congdon Drive in Thebarton.

South Australia Health’s Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said some patients required oxygen therapy.

All patients are in a stable condition and are expected to make a full recovery.

Emergency services attended the ice skating arena just before 3.30am on Sunday to test the area for harmful gasses and found high levels of carbon monoxide in the air.

It is unknown how many people have been affected.

It’s understood a dehumidifier and ice resurfacer at the rink could have been the source of the carbon monoxide poisoning.

Professor Spurrier urged anyone experiencing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning after visiting the ice skating rink to seek medical assistance.

‘Anyone still experiencing symptoms should seek a medical review today,’ Professor Spurrier said in a statement.

‘People who are pregnant and very young infants are advised to seek a medical review today regardless of symptoms.’

The effects of carbon monoxide are generally transient, with symptoms resolving once individuals are no longer exposed to the chemical.

However, some people who attended the facility yesterday may still be experiencing symptoms.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, tiredness, nausea and in more severe cases, shortness of breath.

Young children, people who are pregnant, older people and those with chronic illnesses such as heart and lung disease, are at increased risk of health impacts from carbon monoxide poisoning.
