aldi customers risk being turned away under new bag search rule

Aldi shoppers may risk being turned away unless they comply with a fresh rule on bag inspections. Aldi, which competes with Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda, warns customers that they could be denied service if they do not follow the bag check rule.

According to an Aldi staff member, sale refusals have been suggested as a measure. The employee of the German giant, which started operating in the UK in Stechford, Birmingham, in the 1990s, told The Grocer Magazine about the newly implemented bag inspection policy at their store back in August.

Both security offices and Aldi personnel are carrying out the checks. The worker said: “We are asking that they allow us to look in the bags to see if they are empty. We have been asking to look in the bags to make sure none of our items are in there.”

Customers who refuse these bag checks might lose their chance of purchase, according to them. However, Aldi made it clear that this is not a country-wide rule, but rather, it’s up to individual branches to establish such regulations for their customers.

A Facebook user even warned: “New policy at Aldi, all empty shopping bags must be on the belt plus all shopping.” To which another Aldi worker responded saying that it was an “awful feeling” to have to examine customer’s bags.

An Aldi spokesperson has confirmed that a bag check policy has been introduced in “some stores” as a temporary measure due to the current shoplifting crisis. The representative for the budget supermarket, named the cheapest in the country by Which?, also assured that no customer would ever be asked without their consent and approval.
