After France, UPI services to be launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius tomorrow
The Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services will be launched in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on February 12, announced the Ministry of External Affairs on Sunday. RuPay card services will also be introduced in Mauritius.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth will attend the launch of UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius on Monday via video conference, said the ministry.
The launch of UPI services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius will enable the availability of digital payments for Indian nationals travelling to the two countries as well as for tourists from there arriving to India.
The launch will benefit a wide cross-section of people through a faster and seamless digital transaction experience and enhance digital connectivity between the countries, said the external affairs ministry.
The extension of RuPay card services in Mauritius will enable Mauritian banks to issue cards based on RuPay mechanism and facilitate the usage of such cards for settlements both in India and Mauritius.
Before this, the NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) joined hands with Lyra, a leading French expert in e-commerce and proximity payments, to introduce UPI services in France.
This partnership marked a milestone, with the iconic Eiffel Tower becoming the first merchant in the country to accept UPI payments, simplifying the transaction process for Indian tourists.
