'Soundbites and smiles won't fix Plymouth's problems'

how to, 'soundbites and smiles won't fix plymouth's problems'

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during his visit to MSubs on February 9, 2024

The raft of meaningless platitudes rolled out by the Prime Minister on a visit to Plymouth is sadly an indication of the desperation of a man who knows he is running out of time to turn around the fortunes of a party which has an electoral disaster in the making for years.

Rishi Sunak was smiles and soundbites as he visited the city on Friday, starting with an early-morning jog on the Hoe and then visiting MSubs to see some of the marine engineering which is taking place and actually offers some light.

The PM can’t be faulted for the enthusiasm with which he stuck to Tory messaging that is designed to tell us that, really, everything is about to get better and we should just stick with him and not the other side for a bit longer.

Except things aren’t getting better, apart from the fact that rampant inflation has slowed slightly due to the fact it was almost impossible for it to continue at the rate it was rising.

Waiting lists are still high, the hospital is in its second ‘critical’ incident within a month, and the cost of living crisis is as deep as ever.

The fact that the PM said money had been given to Devon County Council to fix our potholes when it is Plymouth City Council that has the job of doing it was typically clueless.

The additional funding for councils to deal with social care has been lambasted as a short term fix by the council leader – albeit a Labour councillor – while the money announced to create more NHS dental appointments was this week described as a sticking plaster on a gaping wound by the British Dental Association.

It is worth mentioning that it is the policies, manifestos and behaviour of his predecessors which is afflicting Mr Sunak’s premiership, but his claim that only his party can fix things is one that few people will fail to see through for what it really is: a last roll of the dice.
