Martin Lewis advises how to save 'serious' amount of money when buying curtains

Money-saving guru Martin Lewis has issued a “serious” piece of advice to shoppers looking to save money on curtain installation.

As reported by the Daily Record, Lewis warns that you could be spending hundreds of euro too much and you do not even know to question it.

On a recent episode of The Martin Lewis Podcast, the expert asked people who had worked in the retail industry to write in with any money-saving tricks.

One former worker rang in and told Martin: “I used to work in fabrics and furnishings. My tips for buying curtains is that shops will often say you need to buy curtains two or three times the width of your window. Yes, they do look better with more gather but it’s not actually needed, that’s about aesthetics, that’s great if you’ve got pots of money but actually one-and-a-half times is enough.

“Plus, if you buy with a thermal or blackout lining, they will last longer, it also insulates your home better.”

Martin concurred: “That could save some serious amounts of money. Curtains are incredibly expensive.”

He added: “Going for one-and-a-half times the width could have a material impact on your finances.”

High-quality made-to-measure curtains can cost up to a whopping €3,500. As Homehow explains on their website: “Depending on the complexity of the job, the average cost of fitting curtains is around £40-£400 (€46-€460) per window.

“This includes the cost of the curtains, the hardware, and the installation.”

The site explains how cheaper curtains can be in the €46 ballpark, but higher-quality versions could cost you a lot of money.

The website added: “Simple nylon curtains will usually cost around £10-£40 (€12-€46), whereas the price for professionally fitted custom-designed silk curtains on a large bay window is around £2000-£3000 (€2,300-€3,475).

“The average cost for fitting a curtain pole or handrail is around £80-£150 (€93-€174).”
