  • Reviews for the Tesla Cybertruck are positive — so far.
  • Drive and performance seem to be great, but fingerprints quickly degrade the look.
  • Reactions to the Cybertruck in person are polarizing.

Official reviews for Tesla’s Cybertruck are rolling in, and so far, the hulking stainless steel truck is largely living up to the hype.

Recent reviews in Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal praise the Cybertruck for a smooth ride, tight handling at low speeds, and achievements in design and engineering.

The complaints, much like the truck itself, are rather unique compared to a typical pickup-truck review. Among Bloomberg’s hangups were the truck’s smudge-prone exterior and its propensity to attract unwanted attention.

Keeping up with smudges and fingerprints on the Cybertruck’s exterior is “like trying to remove dog hair from your coat. It’s a tedious task and there’s always one more that you missed,” reporter Hannah Elliot writes.

Much has been made of Tesla’s choice to use stainless steel, with industry experts predicting ahead of the truck’s launch that it would probably get dirty pretty quickly.

But WSJ’s Dan Neil thinks these anxieties are antithetical to the rugged reputation Cybertruck is trying to cultivate.

“Brah, do you even hear yourself?” Neil wrote. “Most bully 4x4s you see on the road never leave asphalt for fear of scratching their glossy, fingerprint-resistant surface.”

Among Neil’s takeaways: The Cybertruck is an on-road performance vehicle, not an off-road one.

Elliot muses in her review that driving the Cybertruck around Hollywood is akin to wandering the streets as a celebrity. iPhone lenses followed her at every turn, and men longing to see the inside the truck in a Home Depot parking lot forced Elliot to rush to the truck and make a quick exit.

Even before its launch, the Cybertruck was a magnet for internet attention, with each new photo garnering thousands of opinions online from eager posters.

Reactions to the truck were polarizing in Elliot’s experience, with just as many detractors as there were fans of the hulking electric truck.

“You’ll need thick skin if you own one, especially if you post photos of it online where the trolls are especially toxic,” Elliot wrote. “The Cybertruck makes as many people cringe as clap.”
