Causes
- Infection occurs when larval forms of the parasite, released by snails, enter the skin. These worms live in freshwater bodies such as canals, rivers, lakes, ponds and reservoirs.
- An individual becomes infected when he/she comes in contact with the infested water while washing, paddling or swimming.
- Transmission occurs when the affected individuals contaminate water sources through their excreta containing eggs.
- Larvae that penetrate the skin, grow into adults and lay eggs inside the human body. If untreated, worms can continue laying eggs in the body for years. Some eggs accumulate and cause damage to internal organs, while some others are excreted.
