Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes F1 Team

Norbert Haug, former vice president of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport, expressed profound surprise at Lewis Hamilton’s unforeseen decision to join Ferrari.

Hamilton, a titan in Formula 1, is poised to conclude his lengthy tenure with Mercedes at the conclusion of the forthcoming 2024 season, embarking on a new chapter in 2025 alongside Charles Leclerc at the storied Italian stable.

The unexpected announcement caught many off guard, including Haug, an instrumental figure in Mercedes’ reentry into F1 in 1994 as an engine supplier, eventually evolving into a championship-winning team in 2010 during the turbo-hybrid era.

In an interview with Motorsport-Magazin, Haug confessed, “If I had to bet on one enduring partnership in Formula 1, it would have been Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes. I was utterly astounded. I would have staked everything on the notion that it would remain unchanged forever.”

Hamilton’s legacy at Mercedes is indisputable, clinching 82 Grand Prix victories and an impressive six World Championships during his tenure.

Haug’s departure from Mercedes coincided with Hamilton’s arrival, further highlighting the profound impact the British driver had on the team.

Reflecting on Hamilton’s departure, Haug lamented Mercedes’ loss, emphasizing Hamilton’s significance beyond his on-track prowess. “He’s the epitome of Formula 1 success. His contributions, both on and off the track, transcend mere racing. His advocacy for equality across genders and races is commendable.”

As Formula 1 enthusiasts await the onset of the 2024 season, Hamilton’s shock move to Ferrari remains a focal point of discussion, setting the stage for an intriguing chapter in the sport’s history. Teams and drivers are gearing up for the official F1 pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, where the first glimpses of the season’s potential will unfold from February 23 to 25.
