Sari Walkathon reaches Times Square New York
After a successful stint in London, UK based organisation British Women in Saris has made a mark in Times Square, New York on May 4. It was an Olympic style parade, from the Central Park to Times Square, with representation of women from nine countries wearing the sari in their own unique drapes. The participating countries were India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Uganda, United Kingdom, Trinidad, Guyana and the United States. The concept of the event was Mile Sur Mera Tumhara.
A brainchild of Dr Dipti Jain, the group includes over 1000 women from the South Asian diaspora, residing overseas, who take pride in flaunting saris in distant lands and promoting the history, artisanal value and diversity of the weaves. The walkathon was co-hosted by Dr Rita Kakati Shah, a medic turned entrepreneur, who has established a philanthropic venture named Uma. Talking about the sari walkathon, Dipti says, “New York was an obvious, unanimous choice as it is the financial capital of the world. We know that with our ideas of giving more acceptance to the sari in public places and daily life, across the world, we need people from every corner of the world to be aware and curious about the sari and its legacy.” The event was honoured and acknowledged by Dilip Chauhan, deputy commissioner, Mayor’s Office of International Affairs, New York. Representatives from different consulates were also there at the event.
