Samsung Galaxy S24 series: Everything you need to know ahead of January 17 launch
January is finally here and excitement is building for Samsung’s next major smartphone launch – the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung’s flagship S series has consistently been one of the most popular and capable smartphone lines each year. And with just a couple of days left for the January 17 Galaxy Unpacked event, here is a comprehensive overview of all the design tweaks, cutting-edge specs, software enhancements, camera upgrades and other key details we know so far about these eagerly awaited new devices.
Samsung Galaxy S23 series: Design
While initial renders suggest the overall look of the Galaxy S24 series will stay relatively similar to the S23 lineup, a number of thoughtful design refinements are expected. The S24 and S24+ will likely feature fully squared-off edges for a premium feel in hand, while the S24 Ultra appears set to keep its signature contoured edges and sleek silhouette.
However, Samsung looks poised to finally adopt flat displays across the S24 range, with the S24 Ultra rumoured to be equipped with an expansive 6.8-inch 1440p flat OLED display capable of an exceptionally bright 2500 nits peak brightness, a sizable upgrade from the S23 Ultra’s still impressive 1750 nits panel. The S24+ is also getting a display boost, with a marginally larger 6.7-inch QHD+ OLED screen elevated to a silky smooth 120Hz refresh rate, up from FHD+ resolution on the S23+.
In a bid to maximize portability and useability, the S24 Ultra may utilize a titanium frame to shed precious grams compared to aluminium models. The S24 Ultra could be a bit easier to handle than the palm-straining 234g S23 Ultra. Unfortunately, the S24 and S24+ are still expected to stick with aluminium to keep costs down.
Samsung Galaxy S23 series: Performance
The Galaxy S24 models launching in the US and internationally are rumoured to be powered by the recently announced Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, Qualcomm’s latest and greatest smartphone processor. Samsung used a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 variant to great effect in the S23 series and may opt to collaborate with Qualcomm again on a tailored S24 chip.
However, there are discrepancies between reports. While some tipsters have pointed toward a homogenous lineup powered by Qualcomm’s latest and greatest, others have suggested that certain countries will get treated to Samsung’s Exynos 2400 chip instead. These countries include India.
RAM configurations are tipped to range from 8GB on the base S24 up to a mammoth 12GB on the productivity powerhouse S24 Ultra. Storage options will satisfy both casual users and demanding power users, with rumoured capacities of 128/256/512GB for S24, 256/512GB on S24+, and 256GB/512GB/1TB for S24 Ultra.
Endurance is also set for a boost, with a 4000mAh battery with efficient 25W charging on the S24, 4900mAh battery with speedy 45W charging on S24+, and an enormous 5000mAh battery also paired to 45W charging on S24 Ultra.
Samsung Galaxy S23 series: Camera
While the S23 Ultra already packed an incredibly detailed 200MP main camera, Samsung is expected to optimize and enhance this high-resolution sensor even further on the S24 Ultra rather than drastically altering it. The speculated HP2SX model name hints at an evolution of the HP2 sensor found in the S23.
For the all-important zoom lenses, insider leaks indicate a split setup consisting of both a 10MP 3x optical telephoto and 50MP 5x optical periscope lens, a departure from the sole 10MP 10x optical zoom on S23 Ultra. Whether this plays out to be an upgrade or a downgrade is something we’ll be testing out when we get our hands on the review units, so stay tuned.
Unfortunately, the S24 and S24+ may need to retain largely the same 50MP main sensor as their predecessors to keep costs contained. But Samsung’s sophisticated image processing and computational photography software smarts could still unlock photo improvements.
Samsung Galaxy S23 series: One UI
The Galaxy S24 series is primed to ship with One UI 6 or 6.1 based on Google’s latest Android 14 OS. We can expect iterative updates and refinements to Samsung’s polished skin overlaying Android’s newest capabilities.
Early rumours suggest AI-powered features could take centre stage in One UI 6, with generative wallpapers, intelligent photo editing and other tools poised to showcase Samsung’s push into machine learning.
Summing it up
Galaxy S24: As the most affordable variant, the base S24 will likely have a 6.2-inch FHD+ display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 8GB RAM, 128/256/512GB storage, 4000mAh battery with 25W charging, and a versatile triple camera headlined by a detailed 50MP main sensor.
Galaxy S24+: Sitting in the middle, the S24+ is tipped to offer a roomy 6.7-inch QHD+ display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 8/12GB RAM, 256/512GB storage, 4900mAh battery with 45W charging, and the same triple camera array as the S24.
Galaxy S24 Ultra: Living up to its name, the S24 Ultra may well be the utmost premium model with a huge 6.8-inch QHD+ display, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, 12GB RAM, 256/512GB/1TB storage, 5000mAh battery with 45W charging, and quad camera topped by an upgraded 200MP primary sensor paired with both 10MP and 50MP telephoto zooms.
