After the success of Conversations with Friends and Normal People, Sally Rooney has been the author on everyone’s lips, so naturally, when she announced her third book was en route, people sat up and took note.

Her third novel, Beautiful World, Where Are You? hit shelves on 7 September and like all Rooney novels, it’s set in Ireland. Of course, there will be some foreign travel as we are used to seeing in her work.

The newly released book is based in both Dublin and Rome as readers follow four friends, Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon, while they navigate love, distance, and growing older.

Our protagonist Alice is a young writer, who meets Felix and the two decide to travel to Rome together.

However, while she’s gone, her best friend Eileen is trying to get over a difficult breakup. In an attempt to do this she decides to start texting Simon, who she has known since childhood.

The official synopsis reads, ‘Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he’d like to travel to Rome with her.’

‘In Dublin, her best friend Eileen is getting over a break-up, and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood.’

‘Alice, Felix, Eileen and Simon are still young – but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart.’

‘They have sex, they worry about sex, they worry about their friendships and the world they live in. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?’

The cover may be the most beautiful Sally Rooney book yet.

The blue and yellow cover gives us hints into our four characters lives while the blurb reads: ‘I was sitting half-asleep in the back of the taxi, remembering strangely that wherever I go, you are with me, and so is he, and that as long as you both live, the world will be beautiful to me.’

With Normal People’s television adaption gaining critical acclaim and launching Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones to stardom, it’s no surprise her debut novel is also being adapted.

This time around Conversations with Friends has a bit more of a star-studded cast. Cork actress Alison Oliver, Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, Utopia star Sasha Lane and Girls actress Jemima Kirk are all taking on roles in the upcoming series which is currently filming in Ireland.

It’s only a matter of time before Beautiful World, Where Are You is picked up for a television series.
