Jyothi Yarraji wins gold in Asian Indoors, breaks own national record

CHENNAI: India’s Jyothi Yarraji continued her golden run by clinching gold in the 60m hurdles event with a timing of 8.12 seconds at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship in Tehran on Saturday.

In the process, she broke her own national record, which she had created in the previous edition (8.13s) in Astana, Kazakhstan.

After bagging silver last year, Jyothi went a step further to clinch gold in her season-opening competition. Speaking about her achievement, Jyothi said, “The Asian Indoor Athletics Championship was a very good experience. It’s the start and the first international competition of the season, so I am very happy with the performance. This gold medal is special. I was a little worried about the pain in my hamstring last week, but my team and physiotherapists worked hard to make me competition-ready. I am thankful to the Odisha government and the Reliance Foundation for helping me prepare for the competition. I am happy with the way I have started the season.”

Jyothi qualified for the final after finishing on the top in heat 1 by clocking 8.22s. The sprinter dominated the final and went past Asuka Terada of Japan and Hong Kong’s Lui Lai Yiu, who clinched silver and bronze medals respectively.

She trained at the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium for the competition. She also participated in the first Indoor Athletics Test Meet organized at the High-Performance Center.

“It was a really good result for Jyothi, we did a three-week training camp in Bhubaneswar. It was very helpful for her. She wanted to start the season on a good note. She had a small injury during her training, nothing serious, but she couldn’t train for a week. Now she is back in form. This was a good race for her,” said athletics director James Hillier.
