Labour candidate and incumbent leader Sadiq Khan overwhelmingly secured another victory on Saturday and became the Mayor of London once again. During his first victory speech after winning a third consecutive term the Mayor, the politician of Pakistani origin was heckled by a fellow candidate. Britain First candidate Nick Scanlon shouted “Khan killed London,” before walking off the stage at City Hall.

After emerging victorious, Khan gave a passionate speech in which he touched upon the issue of Islamophobia as well. The Mayor termed the religion or the faith he follows as “very very diverse.”

“In Islam we are a very very diverse religion. We have to show them that Islam celebrates diversity and we celebrate our brothers and sisters whether they are muslims or they are non-muslims,” remarked Khan.

Till this point everything was going as usual. Howeverm, after Khan finally thanked the audiences to elect him and make him the Mayor, he was faced with opposition. Many members of the audience started shouting and boo-ing Khan when he uttered a particular sentence: “Thank you from the bottom of my heart, thank you London.”

Notably, Khan dominated the election by winning over Hall with a voting margin of more than 250,000 ballots casted in favour of the former. Despite Khan’s overvelhming victory, a section of the crowd present at City Hall showed disagreement with his ideas by hecking him during his maiden speech.

People who interrupted the remarks would be removed by security, the crowd was informed. A massive opposition piled over his decision to extend London’s ultra low emission zone (ULEZ), could not stop incumbent mayor Khan defeat Tory candidate Susan Hall, who was his closest opponent.

Khan in total won 1,088,225 votes. On the other hand, Hall’s support and counting of votes in her favour were 812,397, ballot that put the latter on a distant second position.

“We faced a campaign of non-stop negativity, but I couldn’t be more proud that we answered the fearmongering with facts, hate with hope, and attempts to divide with efforts to unite,” Khan said while giving a message of unity in his speech.

After some people in the crowd boo-ed, he continued, “We ran a campaign that was in keeping with the spirit and values of this great city, a city that regards our diversity not as a weakness, but as an almighty strength – and one that rejects right hard-wing populism and looks forward, not back.”

Khan ran for reelection on an agenda of social security by eradicating homelessness in the nation’s capital before 2030. He promised to implement additional measures to mitigate climate change and air pollution.

“It’s truly an honour to be re-elected for a third term, and do so with a record level of support from Londoners, with an increased margin of victory,” Khan added.
