SA to monitor firebugs over summer

News, Crime

Convicted firebugs may be electronically monitored in South Australia this summer.

State parliament has passed new laws allowing police to apply to a magistrate for an order to monitor the movements of bushfire offenders during the fire danger season.

The orders can only be applied to someone convicted of a bushfire-related offence and considered a risk of committing a further offence.

“As South Australians gear up to face another fire danger season, they can rest assured we are doing everything in our power to combat the scourge of deliberately lit bushfires.” Attorney-General Kyam Maher said.

Emergency Services Minister Joe Szakacs said the laws would give police an invaluable tool to help reduce the bushfire risk.

“These are important laws that our community and our firefighters deserve,” he said.

SA has escaped major fires so far this season, thanks to spring rains and milder temperatures.

But authorities are warning against complacency over summer, with the wet weather leading to increased fuel loads.

They say the fuel will burn when it inevitably dries during the hotter months ahead.
