Follow all the latest action as the 43rd edition of the Ryder Cup finally gets underway at Whistling Straits.

Team Europe are defending the trophy after their triumphant victory at Le Golf National in 2018, however, they arrive on the shore of Lake Michigan as clear underdogs against one of the strongest American sides in memory. Steve Stricker’s Team USA contains eight of the world’s top 10 players and an abundance of major winners, although Europe still boast the best-ranked player of all in Jon Rahm. There remain questions, as ever, over whether the US team will be able to function as a unit, too, as Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka’s feud simmers in the background.

Europe drew first blood in the morning foursomes with Spanish duo Rahm and Sergio Garcia seeing off the formidable US pairing of Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The USA soon struck back, however, with Dustin Johnson and Open champion Collin Morikawa beating Viktor Hovland and Paul Casey before Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele proved far too good for Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy. Koepka and Daniel Berger then saw off Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick ahead of the afternoon fourballs. Follow all the latest updates below:

Ryder Cup 2021 latest scores and updates

  • USA 3-1 Europe after opening foursomes
  • Johnson & Schauffele 1UP vs Casey & Wiesberger
  • DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton A/S
  • Finau & English vs McIlroy & Lowry A/S
  • Thomas & Cantlay 1UP vs Fleetwood & Hovland

Ryder Cup 2021: DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton 1UP

19:40 , Tom Kershaw

A brilliant sand save by Hatton at the fourth leaves Scheffler with a sliding 5ft putt to halve the hole. It’s a tentative stroke, though, and is pushed past the right lip of the hole. That brings up the first bit of blue on the leaderboard in the fourballs.

Ryder Cup 2021: Finau & English vs McIlroy & Lowry A/S

19:34 , Tom Kershaw

Finau, like so many players this afternoon, sees his tee-shot at the par-3 3rd catch the wind and sail way right of the flag but his pitch back onto the green is brilliant and hits the pin at pace. It doesn’t drop but it settles just a few feet away. McIlroy can’t show such a delicate touch and takes his bunker shot far too cleanly. Lowry manages to take up the mantle, though, and saves par to halve the hole.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele 1UP vs Casey & Wiesberger

19:23 , Tom Kershaw

Casey pulls a 3ft putt to win the third hole. It took the lip but never seemed tempted to drop. A dreadful miss.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Cantlay 1UP vs Fleetwood & Hovland

19:17 , Tom Kershaw

Cantlay and Hovland’s birdie efforts slip past the hole before Fleetwood’s takes the lip but refuses to drop. Thomas, who endured something of a wretched morning with the putter, makes no mistake, though. He walks it into the hole and that’s an early lead for the Americans.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Cantlay vs Fleetwood & Hovland

19:11 , Tom Kershaw

The final group is out, with Thomas and Cantlay making a formidable US pair. Tommy Fleetwood is no stranger to Ryder Cup heroics, though, and he’s playing alongside the impressive Viktor Hovland. All four players have short approaches into the first green and will have good chances to make birdie.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele 1UP vs Casey & Wiesberger

19:06 , Tom Kershaw

First blood of the afternoon session goes to the USA. Johnson hit a sublime tee-shot into the par-3 3rd, accounting for the wind perfectly, and it left virtually a kick-in gimme. With that assurance, Schauffele steps up and rolls a birdie putt in himself from far further out. Casey and Wiesberger can’t match it.

Ryder Cup 2021: Finau & English vs McIlroy & Lowry A/S

18:58 , Tom Kershaw

It’s halved in birdies thanks to a brilliant putt from Finau. He didn’t play in the morning session but takes to the green as if he knows them by heart, stroking the ball in from some 30ft. The crowd go berserk but Lowry doesn’t crumble under the pressure, calmly completely his own three to halve the first hole.

Ryder Cup 2021: Finau & English vs McIlroy & Lowry

18:52 , Tom Kershaw

McIlroy is back out there and will be keen to redeem himself after that difficult defeat this morning. He pulls his drive at the first but recovers brilliantly from the rough to set up a great birdie chance. Lowry, making his rookie appearance, hardly suffered from any nerves and threw his pitch in close, too. A strong start from the Europeans.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger A/S

18:50 , Tom Kershaw

Johnson rolls in a nervy 5ft putt to tie the second hole with a par after Schauffele found trouble off the tee and could only make bogey.

Ryder Cup 2021: DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton A/S

18:48 , Tom Kershaw

DeChambeau rolls in a 4ft birdie putt after that brilliant flop shot. This match in particular promises to provide fireworks.

Ryder Cup 2021: DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton

18:37 , Tom Kershaw

DeChambeau uncorks a huge drive but it’s tugged left and it hits a spectator on the leg. Hatton finds the fairway and his approach is absolutely exquisite, and it’s almost within gimme range. Scheffler’s effort is poor and leaves him with a huge birdie putt. DeChambeau’s attempt is better, though, gouging the ball out of the rough, and he’ll have a much better chance.

Ryder Cup 2021: DeChambeau & Scheffler vs Rahm & Hatton

18:27 , Tom Kershaw

Next up on the tee, it’s the blockbuster entertainment act the crowd in Wisconsin have all been waiting for. Bryson DeChambeau emerges, one headphone still in for a last bit of pump-up music before he unleashes that driver. He’s partnering Scottie Scheffler, a Ryder Cup rookie who’s enjoyed a fine season on the PGA Tour. On the European team, Jon Rahm is straight back into the action, paired with Tyrrell Hatton.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger A/S

18:25 , Tom Kershaw

Schauffele holes it! A brilliant putt. Wiesberger holds his nerves, though, and knocks his own in to start the match with a half.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

18:22 , Tom Kershaw

It’s Wiesberger who plays the best approach into the first green. A brilliant start by the rookie, whose approach finishes inside 10ft and that’ll be a great look at birdie. Schauffele’s pitch comes up a little shorter but he putted very well this morning. Casey is safely in for par.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

18:13 , Tom Kershaw

No nerves from Wiesberger on the first tee, who hits a lovely drive straight down the fairway, joining Casey who took the honour. Johnson pushes his drive a little right but the rough isn’t long there.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

18:11 , Tom Kershaw

Johnson and Schauffele both played excellently this morning, although it is, perhaps, somewhat surprising to see the latter separated from Cantlay. The Americans must be considered strong favourites to take down Casey and Wiesberger.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Schauffele vs Casey & Wiesberger

18:09 , Tom Kershaw

So here we go. It’s time for the afternoon fourballs and, in the first group, Bernd Wiesberger makes his long-awaited Ryder Cup debut. We spoke to the Austrian last week ahead of his “life-changing” debut.

Ryder Cup 2021: USA show supremacy despite Europe’s Spanish march

Ryder Cup 2021: USA 3-1 Europe

17:41 , Jamie Braidwood

The line-up for the afternoon’s fourballs has just been announced:

Dustin Johnson & Xander Schauffele vs Paul Casey & Bernd Wiesberger

Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler vs Jon Rahm & Tyrrell Hatton

Tony Finau & Harris English vs Rory McIlroy & Shane Lowry

Justin Thomas & Patrick Cantlay vs Tommy Fleetwood & Viktor Hovland

Ryder Cup 2021: USA 3-1 Europe

17:31 , Jamie Braidwood

We are expecting to see changes for the afternoon’s fourballs – but USA already have a couple of very promising partnerships in Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson, and Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay.

Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia is clearly the European partnership for Padraig Harrington to build on.

Ryder Cup 2021: USA 3-1 Europe

17:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Europe were in this position after the morning session in 2018 and things turned out alright in the end at Le Golf National, but that is a strong start from the USA and it feels that bit more significant in a year in which they already looked clear favourites.

  • Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 3&1
  • Johnson & Morikawa 3&2 vs Casey & Hovland
  • Koepka & Berger 2&1 vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick
  • Cantlay & Schauffele 5&3 vs McIlroy & Poulter

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2&1 vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

17:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Both Fitzpatrick and Koepka found the green with their chips from the rough – and Berger can win the match here with a par from six feet.

He leaves it high of the hole, though, offering a glimmer of an opportunity for Westwood to keep the match alive with a par putt from eight or nine feet.

It’s a tough putt to make and nope – it runs well wide.

Koepka wraps up the morning session and hands USA an early lead.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 5&3 vs McIlroy & Poulter

17:19 , Jamie Braidwood

The inevitable is finally confirmed as Poulter leaves a birdie putt short and Europe concede the hole, and with it the match.

After a horror front nine, McIlroy and Poulter responded with some nice play at the turn – but it was matched, and then bettered, by the outstanding Schauffele and Cantlay, who wrapped up the commanding win with back-to-back birdies.

That will be a sobering defeat for Europe. They will have banked on McIlroy and Poulter to win a point there.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

17:17 , Jamie Braidwood

Berger punches an approaches into the rough on 17, giving Europe an opportunity to hit the green and set up a birdie putt.

But Westwood finds the exact same patch of rough by the par-3 green – so no advantage there for either team.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

17:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Both teams make par and we move on the 17th, Europe will have to win the final two holes to pick up a half.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

17:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Europe’s hopes of tying the morning session are seemingly with Westwood and Fitzpatrick – who are heading down the par-5 16th now.

Berger has hit a wild shot into the rough while Fitzpatrick has found the front edge of the green – so Europe will have a putt to win the hole and pull one back.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 4UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

17:04 , Jamie Braidwood

McIlroy and Poulter were banging at the door but Schauffele and Cantlay have stood strong over the back nine – and have now hit back with a birdie at 14 to move 4UP with four holes to play.

It came after another sublime piece of iron play form the Americans – this time from Cantlay who pitched a beauty to within three feet.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 3&2 vs Casey & Hovland

17:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Big moments now in the next match, with Casey and Hovland two down with three to play.

Johnson had a lengthy putt to win the match there and then on the 16th green, and thought he had made it before it just trickled wide.

Hovland wasn’t able to hit back with a hole-winning birdie, leaving Morikawa to roll in the birdie putt for the USA to win the match.

The European pair made just two dropped shots. Johnson and Morikawa made seven birdies over their round and look to be a solid pairing for the USA.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 3&1

16:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Sergio Garcia: “It felt great – the best thing I knew I had [Rahm] on my side. He made every putt. It was an amazing match.

John Rahm: “You guys were seeing what we were feeling [a great partnership]. The way he strikes the ball gives you so much confidence. We made a couple of putts at the right time. Momentum was a big thing.”

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 3&1

16:53 , Jamie Braidwood

But Thomas misses the putt!

Europe take the opening match of the Ryder Cup and move 1-0 up, but there’s a wave of red coming in the groups behind.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 2UP

16:52 , Jamie Braidwood

WHAT A SHOT FROM JORDAN SPIETH!

Thomas’ tee shot actually landed down a steep bank down the side of the green – and Spieth was faced with pitch shot over a wall of rough.

The American takes a huge swing and connects with the ball before the momentum sends him running backwards down the slope.

But, incredibly, his ball pitched up over the bank and dropped dead on the green, giving Thomas a par putt from four or five feet.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 3UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

16:47 , Jamie Braidwood

Wow, Europe think they’ve produced another hole-winning approach at the 13th as McIlroy lands his iron shot to within four feet.

But Schauffele beats it once again, landing his ball inside McIlroy’s and adding a touch of spin to draw it to two feet. That’s too good.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 2UP

16:45 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas and Spieth are involved in a long discussion on the 17th tee, needing to win the par-3 hole to stay in the match.

Thomas’ shot off the tee looked to be long but it took a whack off the bank and rolled across the green before settling into the long rough – not a good place to be.

Garcia responds by producing a safe shot and finding the green. Rahm will have a lengthy putt but Europe will likely win the match with a 3.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 2UP

16:40 , Jamie Braidwood

Sergio Garcia had a putt to win the match for Europe at the par-5 16th but sent the effort past the hole.

Just before then, Spieth had left Thomas a birdie putt from about four or five feet – and Thomas steps up and sinks it confidently to win the hole and take the opening match to the 17th.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 3UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

16:36 , Jamie Braidwood

Schauffele’s tee shot was so good that the birdie putt was handed to American pair – but Poulter sinks a birdie for Europe to half the hole and stay in the match with six to play.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 3UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

16:33 , Jamie Braidwood

McIlroy’s tee shot at 13 was super, but Schauffele has just bettered it with a stunning approach at the par 3.

The American has hit his tee shot to within a foot of the pin on the narrow green and looks to have halted Europe’s hopes of winning a third hole in a row.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 2UP vs Casey & Hovland

16:31 , Jamie Braidwood

Johnson had a look at birdie at the 15th but was unable to convert, while in the group behind Westwood and Fitzpatrick managed to scramble to a half.

The USA remain 2UP in both matches.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 3UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

16:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Another one back for McIlroy and Poulter, as Europe’s anchor pair look to hit back over the back nine.

McIlroy hit a peach of an approach into the middle of the green at the 11th and Poulter found the hole to make back-to-back birdies.

If the match is beyond them, it would be at least be a bonus for Europe if McIlroy and Poulter can find some form over the back nine.

McIlroy then hits his tee shot at the par-3 12th to within five feet!

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 3UP

16:25 , Jamie Braidwood

What a putt from Sergio Garcia! He sinks a stunning birdie putt at the 15th from about 20 feet – and can barely believe it.

The US were much closer to the pin following the approach shots but Justin Thomas saw his effort lip out as Europe move 3UP with three holes to play.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

16:21 , Jamie Braidwood

Fitzpatrick looks like he’s hit his approach shot at the par-4 13th out of bounds, while Koepka has set up a birdie chance for Berger.

The USA pair could be about to move 3UP with five holes to play.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 2UP vs Casey & Hovland

16:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Another one back for Europe, this time, improbably, at the 13th where Paul Casey and Viktor Hovland have recovered from a horrible drive to win the hole.

Casey’s drive went wide right and into the long rough, forcing Hovland to chip back onto the fairway.

But a neat approach from Casey and a strong putt from Hovland sees Europe escape with par, and Dustin Johnson couldn’t respond as he missed the par putt.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 4UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

16:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Finally! Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter win their first hole of the match at the 10th to pull one back.

They still have a long way to go but they’ve started the turn on the right foot, as McIlroy rolls in a putt from eight or so feet.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

16:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Lee Westwood leaves a birdie putt at 12 short as Europe miss the chance to hit straight back.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

16:04 , Tom Kershaw

The tide is turning emphatically in the US’ favour now. Back-to-back birdies at 10 and 11 see Koepka & Berger move 2UP on Westwood & Fitzpatrick.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 3UP vs Casey & Hovland

16:01 , Tom Kershaw

Johnson & Morikawa are running away with this match now. Johnson’s tee-shot at the 12th is brilliant and Morikawa, as ever, makes no mistake with the putter and rolls in a birdie.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 2UP

15:59 , Tom Kershaw

A sniff of hope for the Americans at the 13th. Spieth’s pitch is magnificent and stops just a few feet below the hole, leaving Thomas with an uphill birdie putt. Garcia’s attempt from much further away trickles low and the lead is cut to two.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 1UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

15:51 , Tom Kershaw

Koepka & Berger immediately regain their lead at the 10th. Koepka’s drive found the left rough but it was a booming 314 yards and left Berger with an uphill pitch. It’s brilliant, too, catching the fringe and trickly down towards the flag. Westwood’s approach is adequate but leaves Fitzpatrick with a testing birdie putt that he can’t make.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 3UP

15:48 , Tom Kershaw

What stunning tee-shots at the par-3 12th. It’s Rahm first, who takes on the pin, which is nestled on a thin ribbon of green between two bunkers. It’s perfect and leaves a makeable birdie putt. The pressure is on Spieth and his wedge is every bit as good. Neither can make the putt, though, and the hole is halved.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 5UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

15:45 , Tom Kershaw

It’s another horror show for McIlroy & Poulter at the 8th. Poulter has little more than 5ft to win the hole but pushes it horribly and leaves McIlroy with a nervous return. The Northern Irishman makes it but that will feel like a loss.

15:38 , Tom Kershaw

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick A&S

15:37 , Tom Kershaw

A huge gift for the Europeans at the ninth. Both teams have makeable birdie putts and it’s Berger to go first. He blazes it a good 5ft past, though. Westwood is up next with a chance to win the hole. It’s on a great line but it just won’t break enough to catch the right edge of the hole. That doesn’t matter in the end because Koepka misses his nervy par putt and the match is back to A/S.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 1UP vs Casey & Hovland

15:28 , Tom Kershaw

Johnson puts his partner in a spot of bother, slicing his approach into the 9th green just a fraction, and it tumbles down into the greenside rough. Morikawa’s recovery is good and ensures a par. Casey has a chance to win the hole but his birdie putt lips out from 12ft.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 3UP

15:23 , Tom Kershaw

There’s no such trouble for the two Spaniards up front, though, who are looking well set to inflict a rare defeat on Spieth & Thomas. Rahm’s drive leaves Garcia just 49 yards to the hole and his approach is pinpoint, stopping just 2ft from the flag. Spieth’s drive was just as good, but Thomas’s approach was not, finishing almost 30ft from the flag. They can’t hole that and Garcia & Rahm move to 3UP through 10 holes.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 5UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

15:19 , Tom Kershaw

It’s a let-off and a flicker of mercy for McIlroy & Poulter at the 6th. After winning every hole so far, Schauffele has just 10ft for birdie after a fine approach by Cantlay. This time, though, the ball doesn’t drop.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 5UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

15:08 , Tom Kershaw

Spectacular from Schauffele! Both teams lay up at the par-5 5th and Poulter tucks his approach in close. Cantlay goes second and comes up short to leave his partner with a 37ft birdie putt. It’s the first sliver of daylight for the European pair but the door is shut emphatically. Schauffele judges the putt to perfection and the ball canters into the heart of the hole at pace. McIlroy misses from 8ft to half and he and Poulter have lost each of their first five holes…

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 1UP vs Casey & Hovland

14:58 , Tom Kershaw

Casey misses the green at the long par-3 7th and the Europeans can’t get up and down. Johnson can’t hole the birdie putt after a fine tee-shot by Morikawa but a par will do. They take the lead.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 1UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

14:56 , Tom Kershaw

That’s much better from Fitzpatrick, who rolls in a lovely putt for birdie at the 6th. That’s enough to win the hole and the lead is back to one in the third match.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 2UP

14:52 , Tom Kershaw

Rahm’s putter is running so hot and he holes another clutch birdie putt to win the hole. Spieth’s tee-shot had left Thomas in a tough position and the Americans could only make par.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 4UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

14:51 , Tom Kershaw

Things are going from bad to worse for McIlroy & Poulter. It’s McIlroy’s errant driving that causes the problem, pulled into a horrible position down the left side at the fourth. The ball is way above Poulter’s feet and he unsurprisingly misses the green by a fair distance. They can’t get up and down out of the rough and it’s a bogey. Cantlay & Schauffele makes a fuss-free par and that’s four in four. A disastrous start for the heartbeat of Europe’s team.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa vs Casey & Hovland A/S

14:48 , Tom Kershaw

The momentum turns up ahead again, too, as Johnson holes an 11ft birdie putt at the 6th to bring that match back to A/S.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

14:46 , Tom Kershaw

Koepka & Berger quickly recover their two-hole lead with a birdie at the par-5 5th. It was a reward for Koepka’s bravery, who carried a 3-wood over the water, leaving Berger with a fine chance to get up and down. Westwood & Fitzpatrick can only make par.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 1UP

14:40 , Tom Kershaw

The quality of the opening group has been spectacular. The par-3 7th is all of 221 yards and Thomas steps up first, hitting a wonderful draw that finishes no more than 10ft from the hole. Garcia’s effort is just as good and both teams are left with makeable birdie putts. It’s Rahm to go first and he holes it! Another terrific putt by the world No 1. The pressure is on Spieth and he pushes it just a fraction and it runs past on the high side. The Spaniards have the lead again.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 3UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

14:35 , Tom Kershaw

McIlroy & Poulter are completely off the pace at the moment. The Californian pairing of Cantlay & Schauffele have been excellent and the former uses the slope perfectly at the par-3 3rd, his ball running all the way down to the flag. Schauffele taps in for birdie and Europe have no reply. They’re three behind through three holes.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 1UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

14:32 , Tom Kershaw

That’s a much-needed boost for Westwood & Fitzpatrick at the fourth. Koepka pulled his drive and left Berger in a bad position. They can only make bogey and a two-putt par gets the Europeans their first winning hole.

Cantlay & Schauffele 2UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

14:29 , Tom Kershaw

McIlroy is plugged in the bunker at the second and he can only skew the ball way over the back. It leaves Poulter with a horrible chip down the slope and the US go 2UP through two holes in the final group.

14:24 , Tom Kershaw

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia A/S

14:18 , Tom Kershaw

Spieth holes his birdie putt from the back of the green after Rahm & Garcia could only make bogey. The first group go back to A/S but Spieth’s tee-shot at the sixth is wayward and leaves Thomas in a terrible position. No mistakes from Rahm, who finds the fairway with a 3-wood.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger 2UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

14:16 , Tom Kershaw

Koepka is playing brilliantly so far. Berger’s approach at the par-3 3rd wasn’t the best but it caught the slope and runs down towards the hole. Westwood’s is much the same and both teams are left with makeable birdie putts. Koepka holes his in bullish fashion to heap the pressure on Fitzpatrick, who can’t find the answer.

Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 1UP

14:12 , Tom Kershaw

Garcia’s approach left Rahm in a perfect position at the fifth, but the world No 1’s approach comes up short and finds the water that guards the front of the green. Thomas & Spieth take a more conservative approach, laying up short, and will have a birdie putt from the back of the green.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele 1UP vs McIlroy & Poulter

14:09 , Tom Kershaw

Cantlay & Schauffele take the lead with a birdie at the first. McIlroy’s approach stuck on the fringe and left Poulter with a very tricky putt. Schauffele’s flop was pinpoint, though, and Cantlay rolls in an easy putt. You only need to have watched the FedEx Cup to know the Californian doesn’t miss those.

Koepka & Berger 1UP vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

14:07 , Tom Kershaw

An easy victory for Koepka & Berger at the par-5 2nd after Fitzpatrick’s wayward drive. A fine chip by Koepka leaves a tap-in birdie and they have a 1UP lead.

Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia 1UP

14:04 , Tom Kershaw

Rahm holes a huge putt at the fourth to win the hole! A fantastic turnaround by the two Spaniards, who’ve won the last two holes and now lead 1UP.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa vs Casey & Hovland A/S

13:59 , Tom Kershaw

Back to the par-3 3rd where Morikawa and Casey hit those brilliant approaches. Johnson steps up first but his putt slides low of the hole coming across the slope. Hovland has a shorter chance to win it and rolls the ball in confidently. We’re back to A/S.

Ryder Cup 2021: Cantlay & Schauffele vs McIlroy & Poulter

13:58 , Tom Kershaw

The final group takes to the tee. Ian Poulter takes the honour, embraces the crowd, and booms a drive straight down the middle. Cantlay may be making his rookie appearance but is no more fazed, finding the first cut down the left side.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 1UP vs Casey & Hovland

13:54 , Tom Kershaw

Hovland steadies himself with a fine chip at the par-5 2nd that so nearly drops. The hole is halved with birdies as Johnson equals that.

Morikawa then hits an exquisite 6-iron into the 190 yard par-3 to leave Johnson with a terrific look at birdie. Casey, though, goes one better! A brilliant draw turns in towards the flag, pitches just short and stops only a few feet past. Two shots of the highest quality.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick A/S

13:50 , Tom Kershaw

Oh no! Fitzpatrick’s brilliant approach at the first leaves Westwood with a short putt for birdie and the hole. He pushes it badly, though. A chance wasted.

Ryder Cup 2021: Thomas & Spieth vs Rahm & Garcia A/S

13:46 , Tom Kershaw

Rahm & Garcia bounce back at the par-3 third. Thomas’s tee-shot was good in its own right, but Spieth’s birdie putt dips low of the hole as it runs out of pace. There’s no such issue for Rahm, though. Garcia left him with a great look at birdie across the slope and it hits the middle of the hole at speed. Back to all square. A great response from the Spaniards.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 1UP vs Casey & Hovland

13:43 , Tom Kershaw

A nervous tee-shot at the second from Hovland, who hooks his drive way right. He may have gotten lucky, though, as the rough there has been trampled down by the fans. Johnson’s drive is perfect, bombed way down the middle of the fairway.

Ryder Cup 2021: Koepka & Berger vs Westwood & Fitzpatrick

13:38 , Tom Kershaw

Our third match is about to get underway. It’ll be Lee Westwood, making a record-equalling 11th appearance for Team Europe, who takes the honour.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa 1UP

13:37 , Tom Kershaw

Casey’s putt runs past the hole at the first. It’s a good effort but Hovland had left him with too much to do. Morikawa rewards Johnson’s brilliant recovery with an ice-cool birdie putt, though. That’s the same sort of nerveless display on the greens that propelled the 24-year-old to victory at Royal St George’s earlier this year. They go 1UP and the USA quickly lead both matches out on the course.

Ryder Cup 2021: Spieth & Thomas 1UP

13:34 , Tom Kershaw

Rahm was forced to stand in the bunker and play the ball out of the rough on the lip after Garcia’s pulled approach. It’s a tricky pitch and comes up just short on the fringe. Garcia has a tricky chance for birdie and the ball just drops low of the hole. Thomas’ pitch leaves Spieth with a good look at birdie and he delivers. The Americans take a 1UP lead with a birdie at the par-5 2nd.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson makes spectacular recovery

13:31 , Tom Kershaw

Morikawa’s drive has left Johnson in a horrible position in the left rough, with the ball below his feet in thick rough. The recovery is spectacular, though, and stops dead pin-high. Hovland had a great chance to tuck his approach in close, but his wedge is a touch long and leaves a tricky birdie putt.

Ryder Cup 2021: Advantage USA at the second

13:27 , Tom Kershaw

Spieth’s drive allowed Thomas to take on the green at the par-5 second. His approach comes up just short but it’s a perfect leave and they will expect to get up and down from there. Garcia has a far trickier task, taking a fairway wood out of the thick rough. He finds the bunker and Rahm is faced with another tricky scramble to save a half.

Ryder Cup 2021: Casey starts with a perfect drive

13:24 , Tom Kershaw

A blistering drive by Casey sails down the right side of the fairway. A perfect drive under immense pressure and the Englishman savoured every moment of it. Morikawa leads off for the USA. He tugs his drive a touch right and finds the rough.

Ryder Cup 2021: Johnson & Morikawa vs Casey & Hovland

13:22 , Tom Kershaw

Next up on the first tee, it’s our second match. Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, two formidable major champions, face Paul Casey, a veteran of this competition, and Ryder Cup rookie Viktor Hovland. It’ll be Casey to go first.

Ryder Cup 2021: Spieth finds fairway at the second

13:20 , Tom Kershaw

Next up, it’s the par-5 second, which comes in at 577 yards. Rahm’s drive fades a touch too much, though, and catches the right-hand rough. It may be hard to reach the green in two from there. No such trouble for Spieth. He hits a perfect high draw straight down the middle.

Ryder Cup 2021: First hole is halved

13:18 , Tom Kershaw

Thomas leaves his birdie putt high of the hole and the first hole of the Ryder Cup is halved. A fortunate escape for the Europeans.

Ryder Cup 2021: USA have strong look at birdie

13:15 , Tom Kershaw

Rahm’s bunker shot finds the fringe at the back of the green and Garcia so nearly holes it! It runs just past the lip. But Spieth’s approach is deadly from short-range and Thomas will have a short birdie putt to take first blood in the match.

Ryder Cup 2021: Garcia and Thomas tee-off

13:11 , Tom Kershaw

Garcia steps up first, as is the honour of the visitors, and pulls his drive ever so slightly left and finds the bunker. That could leave Rahm with a very trick second shot.

Thomas takes the honour for the Americans and, after steadying his nerves, hits a perfect drive that fades from left to right and bombs down the fairway.

Ryder Cup 2021: Spieth & Thomas bask in huge cheers

13:04 , Tom Kershaw

Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas have competed alongside one another successfully so many times in the past and that’s the reason they’re leading from the front this week. They get a huge reception from the crowd.

The players are on the tee. The official starter is readying his lines and the Ryder Cup is about to begin.

Ryder Cup 2021: Rahm & Garcia on the tee

13:03 , Tom Kershaw

Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia make the long walk to the first tee with chants of USA booming in the background. When they emerge in front of the grandstand, huge boos ring out but the Spaniards laugh and embrace the nose.

Ryder Cup 2021: Boos for the European captains

12:57 , Tom Kershaw

Boos ring out as Padraig Harrington and his vice-captains walk out onto the first tee. The grandstand is packed and loud, the stage is set, and in less than ten minutes time, the 43rd Ryder Cup will officially get underway.

Ryder Cup 2021: The strongest US team in history

12:46 , Tom Kershaw

Ryder Cups are famously never dictated by world rankings, but the strength of this US team cannot be ignored. In fact, by that measurement, this is the best team the Americans have ever fielded, featuring eight out of the world top 10 and an abundance of major champions.

Ryder Cup 2021: Spieth & Thomas vs Garcia & Rahm

12:39 , Tom Kershaw

We’re less than half an hour away from our first foursomes match and what a brilliant spectacle it promises to be. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas are a formidable pairing, close friends with brilliant records in the Ryder Cup. Sergio Garica, though, boasts more winning points than this entire US team combined. He is paired with fellow Spaniard and world No 1 Jon Rahm, who memorably defeated Tiger Woods in the singles in Paris. What a show we have in store.

Ryder Cup 2021: Stricker pre-empted McIlroy and Rahm positions

12:33 , Tom Kershaw

US captain Steve Stricker said he had not tried to work out which European players would be paired together, but had expected Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy to feature in the first and fourth matches.

“I feel great about our pairings, some teams that have played together over the years, whether in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup,” Stricker said. “We are really excited about how these guys are playing and the order they are going out.”

Former US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau was among the players to sit out the opening session but Stricker said no players had expressed any disappointment about his plans.

“These guys have been incredible,” he added. “I can’t stress that enough. It’s about the communication we have had, being upfront with them and letting them know what we are thinking so there are no curveballs.

“We have heard it multiple times from all the players, if you want to play me once or all five, that’s up to you, just so we can try to win this cup.”

Ryder Cup 2021: Harrington hails Europe’s team spirit

12:14 , Tom Kershaw

Europe captain Padraig Harrington hailed his side’s strength in depth after leaving Tommy Fleetwood and Shane Lowry out of the opening session.

Fleetwood won all four of his matches together with Francesco Molinari in Paris, but with the Italian not making the team for Whistling Straits three years later, Fleetwood joined former Open champion Lowry in sitting out Friday’s foursomes.

“That says a lot about our team that he is comfortable after going 4-0 and can look around his team and be confident that there are other people that are taking up that strain,” Harrington said of Fleetwood.

“He’s prepared to sit there and wait his chance in the afternoon, which really just sums up our team how balanced it is and the understanding of the players that they have to give other people their opportunity, as well.

“I want every player on my team absolutely dying to play every match. But I want them to also understand that there are other people in the team, they have to step aside, and they have done that brilliantly.”

Ryder Cup 2021: What makes a winning captain? It’s not an exact science

12:06 , Jack Rathborn

In the early hours of Sunday morning in Brookline, knowing his flagging team were staring down the barrel, Ben Crenshaw played his Hail Mary. He called his close friend, George W Bush, then the governor of Texas, to deliver a speech to those in the fractious and frayed US locker room. And so, with the players waiting quizzically, Bush read aloud a letter sent by Colonel William Travis before the Battle of the Alamo, replete with pledges to “to never surrender or retreat”.

A few minutes later, after his final three words – “victory or death” – Bush promptly walked straight out the door without a moment’s hesitation. Overcome by hysterical patriotic pride, what followed amounted to a sporting massacre as the Americans won all of the first six singles matches and completed one of the most remarkable and contentious comebacks in Ryder Cup history. “I’ve never seen such firepower going out,” Crenshaw said afterwards, his clothes stained by champagne, as his players waved US flags from the balcony.

What makes a winning Ryder Cup captain? It’s not an exact science

‘It’s the X factor’: Can team spirit tilt the Ryder Cup in Europe’s favour?

12:00 , Jack Rathborn

There’s an opening gambit Graeme McDowell likes to tell at the many corporate days he’s had to attend over the last decade. “In the American team room, they’d have three ping pong tables,” he says, with a little theatric suspense, “… and we’d have a bar. People laugh but it’s actually true. We’d have a couple of beers, shoot the s***, and naturally built that camaraderie.”

It might seem a somewhat rose-tinted, helpfully inebriated insight into what binds Team Europe, but few themes have become as tendentious and synonymous with the Ryder Cup as team spirit. It’s the elixir that’s given life to famous upsets and infamous falling-outs, intoxicating champagne celebrations and segregated pod systems. An inherently European advantage cited with almost religious devotion, even by the staunchest non-believers.
