Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds insisted in a tweet Saturday he wasn’t crying as he viewed a video of singer Steven Page performing an ode to Reynolds in honour of the actor’s 2021 Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

“I’m not crying. It’s maple syrup,” Reynolds insisted.

Page, formerly of the group Barenaked Ladies, performed in a checked shirt in a typically Canadian outdoorsy scene, occasionally playing “air guitar” on a real axe, with accompaniment by the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Reynolds, thanked Gov. Gen. Mary May Simon and ended his message with: “I’m a wreck.”

Last night, Canada honoured me with a Governor General’s Award and this video. I’m not crying. It’s just maple syrup. @stevenpage is a friend and legend for wasting this amazing song on me. Thank you to Her Excellency, @GGCanada, Mary Simon. #GGAwards @CanadasNAC I’m a wreck. pic.twitter.com/0ALteFw2QN

Reynolds’ received the National Arts Centre Award, part of the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards announced earlier this year, in recognition work of an extraordinary nature and significance in the performing arts by an individual artist and/or company in the past performance year.

The traditional awards gala in June was cancelled due to COVID-19, but they were presented in a television special on Friday night.

Lifetime achievement awards recipients included: actors Tantoo Cardinal and Catherine O’Hara; Alexina Louie, classical music; Zab Maboungou, dance; and Florent Vollant, popular music.

Lynda Hamilton received the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts.

In addition to his film achievements, notably the popular Deadpool franchise and recently Netflix’s Red Notice, Reynolds was cited for charity work, including a $1-million donation last year from him and his wife, Blake Lively, to food banks in Canada and the United States, including the Ottawa Food Bank.

On Friday, Reynolds and Lively announced a donation to the Red Cross British Columbia flood relief program.

In a popular YouTube video earlier this year, he also “revealed” he was “Bruce,” the Ottawa Public Health “intern” blamed for forgetting to name the winning team in a congratulatory tweet following the National Football League’s Super Bowl championship game.

OPH offered its own congratulations in a tweet Saturday. “To our knowledge, this is the first time that a member of a public health comms team has won a Governor General’s Award. We are so proud of you, Bruce!”

Mayor Jim Watson was also on board, complimenting Reynolds’ kindness and generosity and “thank you for just being NICE.”
