Ryan Reynolds is teaming up with Hollywood director John Krasinski to bring a new heartfelt film titled ‘Imaginary Friends’, just for the kids. Both stars, who are in the news for their upcoming rated ‘R’ projects – Reynolds’ ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ and Krasinski’s ‘A Quiet Place’ prequel- will be colliding reality and imagination with this one-of-a-kind live-action film.
Reynolds, who also serves as a producer on the film, shed light on the creative discussions that led to his collaboration with Krasinski. He said, “We were kind of banging back and forth. We were interested in shooting something that feels like a live-action Pixar film. And that’s really what John put on the page.”
Reflecting on the director’s evolution as a filmmaker, Reynolds expressed his awe in watching his director seamless transition between making chilling sci-fi films like ‘A Quiet Place’ and an emotional one like ‘IF’. Praising the director’s ability to evoke a wide range of emotions from the audiences and showcase his versatility and artistic vision, he said, “I struggle to think of a writer or director more informed by their own parenthood than John Krasinski. Being a dad and a husband has really cemented his cinematic language. What’s most striking to me is that he can make a movie as scary and provocative as ‘A Quiet Place,’ yet he can also do something as tender, unexpected and hilarious as ‘IF’.”
John also shared the motivation behind his new film. He said in a statement, “I’ve always wanted to make a movie for them. Emily says that the Quiet Place movies are PG-40 for them, so they won’t see those for a long time. During the early days of the pandemic, I got to spend a lot of time around my then-8-year-old and 6-year-old daughters and see the power of their imaginations. But as the pandemic wore on, I started seeing their lights dwindle. They had been so full of energy and excitement, but they were becoming more cautious about everything.”
“I thought, wouldn’t it be amazing if you could bring all of that magic into your own real life? If there’s one thing I want people to leave this movie with, it’s that believing in something bigger and more beautiful can actually get you through another day. That’s the kind of story I have always wanted to tell,” he added.
‘IF’, also starring Cailey Fleming, Fiona Shaw, and the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr. and Steve Carell, unleashes the incredible power of a child’s imagination in the film set to release in theatres on May 17.
