RTÉ appoints David Murphy as new Economics and Public Affairs Correspondent
David Murphy has been appointed as the new Economics and Public Affairs Correspondent for RTÉ News.
Mr Murphy currently works as RTÉ’s Political Coverage Editor where he leads the broadcaster’s daily political coverage and its team of journalists at Leinster House.
“For the past six years, I’ve enjoyed the cut and thrust of life covering politics, and I’ve been fortunate enough to work with a terrific team,” Mr Murphy said.
“But I’ve always been stimulated by a challenge, and the job of Economics and Public Affairs Correspondent offers an opportunity to delve into some key subject areas – from housing to migration to climate. And, of course, the economy has a bearing on all of them.”
In the new role, Mr Murphy will report on economic issues, public affairs issues including major political policies and their impact on areas including migration, housing and the cost of tackling climate change.
The role of Economics Correspondent was previously held by Robert Shortt, who was recently appointed as RTÉ Company Secretary.
Mr Murphy holds an MSc in Economic Policy Studies from Trinity College Dublin, an MA in Journalism from Dublin City University and a BA in Spanish and Classics from Trinity College Dublin.
Before taking up his current role, he was RTÉ’s Business Editor and covered the Celtic Tiger, the subsequent financial crisis and the EU-IMF bailout.
Twice a winner of a UCD Smurfit School Business Journalist award, he has also written and presented three documentaries, The Story So Far, Denis O’Brien, The Story of Tony Ryan and Ryanair and The Real Deal, Tony O’Reilly.
He also wrote the number one bestselling book Banksters, an account of the Irish banking collapse, in 2009.
Mr Murphy will start in his new role later this summer.
