‘Level-headed and down-to-earth’ Sarfaraz Khan’s debut makes former RCB teammate AB de Villiers proud
AB de Villiers revealed how proud he felt after seeing former Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Sarfaraz Khan make his debut for the Indian team during the third Test against England in Rajkot.Â
De Villiers and Sarfaraz were teammates at RCB from 2015 to 2019, where the Mumbai batter had made a quick impression in the early stages of his career. The former South African skipper, while talking on his YouTube channel, said that Sarfaraz is a very level-headed and down-to-earth guy and it was great to see the emotional interaction between him and his father Naushad in Rajkot.Â
“I have played with this boy before and he is a very level-headed and down-to-earth guy. I am really proud of him. It was great to see his dad blow kisses after Sarfaraz reached fifty and it was heartwarming for me to watch,” said De Villiers.Â
How did Sarfaraz Khan make the most of his opportunity in Rajkot?
Sarfaraz Khan made a big impact with the bat as he became the first Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar to score twin fifties on his Test debut.
The 26-year-old came into bat in the first innings when Rohit headed back to the pavilion following a brilliant 131. Sarfaraz had a slow start, but quickly started to stamp his authority on the England bowlers, especially the spinners.Â
The Mumbai batter hit his maiden fifty off just 48 balls. This was the joint-fastest fifty by an Indian batter on debut. The Indian batter was run-out for 62 in his first innings, but stitched together an important and match-winning partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal in the second innings.
Sarfaraz scored an unbeaten 68 off 72 balls, smashing six boundaries and three sixes in the second innings to take India’s score to 430 for 4. Rohit Sharma decided to declare in the second session on Day 4, setting a 557-run target for England to chase.
The visitors would ultimately crumble for 122 in the second innings, giving India the win by 434 runs. Sarfaraz’s knocks were hailed by Michael Vaughan as he found the batter to be the ideal No.6 for India.Â
