Ubisoft’s open world Star Wars game is going to be out this summer, but it also has a season pass planned for DLC expansions.
Thanks to Ubisoft Japan accidentally spilling the beans a few hours early, we already knew that the release date for Star Wars Outlaws was August 30 – something that had also been hinted at by the appearance of an age rating listing in South Korea.
The trailer itself has only just been made public and it is very impressive, with some top notch graphics for what is apparently an open world game with several different planets.
For a story trailer though, we’re not sure we really learnt a whole lot more, other than the Han Solo-esque Kay Vess is being coerced into pulling off a dangerous heist in order to win her freedom.
The game is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and you can see that Vess runs into Han Solo himself while he’s still trapped in carbonite.
Several criminal cartels are featured, including the Pykes and the Hutts, although the new one created for the game is the one Vess is having particular trouble with.
Although it’s fun to see Jabba that does mean more Tatooine – despite what Luke Skywalker tried to pretend, apparently the most visited planet in the galaxy – with one brief scene showing a Kyrat Dragon from The Mandalorian.

The other thing that was revealed by the leak is that there’s a Gold and Ultimate Edition of the game, both of which include the season pass and three days of early access.
There’s not much difference between them though, with the Gold Edition costing £94.99 and the Ultimate Edition coming in at £114.99, with a digital art book and a few more cosmetic extras (there’s also a skin pack for your ship and speeder if you pre-order any of the editions).
The season pass includes two unspecified ‘narrative expansions’ after launch, plus the exclusive Jabba’s Gambit mission from day one (implying everyone gets it eventually), and additional skins for Vess and her animal friend Nix.
Despite the season pass, Outlaws is single-player only, which is interesting because EA recently cancelled a game – rumoured to be based on The Mandalorian – and stated that it was moving away from licensed games in general, once it’s completed the Star Wars Jedi trilogy and its previously announced Marvel games.
Whether Ubisoft is now having regrets we’ll probably never know but for those that have always wanted a Star Wars game that focuses on the seedier side of the galaxy this is the closest we’ve ever got.
