Hyderabad: Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika Vemula met Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy in Hyderabad on Saturday and urged him to see that “justice” is done to the family.

Reddy assured her that an investigation would be conducted again into the University of Hyderabad student’s suicide in 2016 and that justice would be done, PTI quoted an official release as saying.

‘Rohith Vemula Not A Dalit’: Telangana Police Gives Clean Chit To All Accused

The Telangana Police submitted a closure report in the death case of Rohith Vemula and gave a clean chit to all accused, saying he was not a Dalit. However, Rohith’s family said that the police was helping the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and said they would request for the reopening of the case.

The police claimed that Vemula was not a Dalit and committed suicide because he was afraid his “real caste identity” would be discovered. Countering the claim, Rohith’s brother called it ‘absurd’ and said that they would meet the Chief Minister, demanding reopening of the case.

The police gave a clean chit to the accused, absolving then Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya, MLC N. Ramchander Rao and University of Hyderabad Vice Chancellor Appa Rao, besides Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani and leaders of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

Speaking exclusively to Times Now, Rohith’s brother Raja Vemula said that they belong to the SC community and alleged that the police is favouring BJP leaders.

“We are exploring legal options now… We belong to SC community until the district collector cancels the certificate… They (Police) are favoring BJP leaders,” Raja Vemula said.

Who was Rohith Vemula? What Is The Case?

The 26-year-old PhD scholar Rohith Vemula allegedly committed suicide at the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) in 2016 after he was suspended. The action was taken against him and four others after a complaint by local unit of the Akhil Bharatatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, for raising issues under the banner of the Ambedkar Students Association (ASA).

Protests erupted on the campus the next day and spread to as far as Delhi, where the Modi government was forced to deny allegations of being anti-Dalit.
