Just six months after announcing her split from Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau appears to be relishing her return to life out of the political spotlight.

The 48-year-old mother of three has moved and found love again after the couple confirmed the end of their 18-year marriage in early August.

Last week, Sophie was said to have had ‘re-partnered’ with an Ottawa pediatric surgeon months before her separation from Trudeau was announced, in a divorce claim made against the doctor.

And now, DailyMail.com can reveal she has been living with Argentinian-born Dr. Marcos Bettolli in the loft-style condo he began renting after splitting from wife Ana Remonda in 2020.

The photos suggest Sophie’s three children are well acquainted with their mother’s new partner, who was seen extending a protective hand for her son Hadrien as they crossed the street, while Sophie trails behind

The two were spotted again Monday morning leaving Bettolli’s place

The prime minister’s former wife was seen dressed down as opposed to her usual glammed up public looks

The home is located on a quiet street less than a mile from both the prime minister’s official residence and the home Bettolli once shared with Remonda and their two daughters, now aged 12 and 14.

The third-floor condo, which boasts a rooftop terrace, has become a second home for the children Sophie shares with Justin – Xavier, 16, Ella-Grace, 15, and Hadrien, who turns 10 at the end of this month.

The children were seen spending two nights with their mother at Bettolli’s home this past weekend.

Exclusive DailyMail.com photos show the couple treated her children and two of their friends to dinner on Saturday night at Yangtze restaurant in the heart of Ottawa’s Chinatown.

Exiting the restaurant with Sophie’s youngest, Bettolli was seen protectively extending his arm as they started to cross the street.

Bettolli is a 47-year-old pediatric surgeon at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa who is embroiled in a bitter divorce battle with Remonda, 46.

A temporary order filed in November and obtained by DailyMail.com shows Bettolli is forking over a whopping CA$13,647 (US$10,154) a month in child support, private school fees, and spousal support to Remonda, who must pay Bettolli $1,333 ($991) a month in child support.

The diminutive doctor’s relationship with Sophie was revealed last October by political journalist Glen McGregor on his blog, A Few Tasteful Snaps.

While it’s not clear how long Sophie and Bettolli have been together, it appears the relationship started at least a few months before she and Justin publicly announced their separation last August.

Remonda noted in her April 26, 2023 divorce petition in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Family Court that her husband ‘has re-partnered with a high-profile individual who attracts significant media attention, and presents significant security considerations, to which the children are exposed while in their father’s care.’

She claimed to take ‘no position with regard to his relationship and personal life’, but feared Bettolli’s relationship ‘may expose the girls to potential media scrutiny and/or security concerns.’

Remonda alleged that Bettolli has not respected an agreement they had ‘that the girls would not interact with the new partner … and it has caused the girls’ discomfort and anxiety.’

Bettolli countered in his June 1 response that Remonda’s attitude towards his new relationship ‘is not in the children’s best interest’ and claimed she had threatened to move back to Argentina if the relationship ‘came to light’.

According to his court filing, after discovering his new relationship, Remonda ‘accessed his personal computer files and threatened to publish private intimate photos of Marcos.’

In a joint statement last August, Sophie and Justin Trudeau said the decision to split came ‘after many meaningful and difficult conversations’ and they insisted ‘we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.’

Since her separation, Sophie is now free from the security detail she has had since Justin was elected in 2015 and can now enjoy stepping out and about or driving around the city on her own

The Canadian couple announced the separation in matching Instagram posts in early August, confirming they had reached a legal agreement and will remain amicable

A statement from the prime minister’s office said the couple ‘signed a legal separation agreement [and] ‘they have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward.’

It added: ‘They remain a close family, and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment. Both parents will be a constant presence in their children’s lives and Canadians can expect to often see the family together.’

Indeed, Sophie vacationed with Justin and their children in Tofino, British Columbia, last summer and joined them for a Christmas holiday at the luxurious Prospect Estate and Villas in Jamaica.

The RCMP, which is responsible for the security of the prime minister and his family, no longer provides Sophie with protection but plainclothes members of the force accompany the Trudeau children everywhere – including to and from Bettolli’s home.

‘We see them sitting outside the building in SUVs and minivans,’ a neighbor said. ‘That’s when we know the children are visiting.’

Free from the security detail she has had since Justin was elected in 2015, Sophie now enjoys getting behind the wheel of her sporty vehicle and driving around the city on her own.

On Saturday she drove to a friend’s house nearby and the two were later spotted going on a brisk walk through the tony Rockcliffe Park neighborhood.

They vowed to ‘remain a close family with deep love and respect for one another and for everything they had built’ in their statement

The following day, she drove to Le Germain Hotel and spent more than an hour visiting a friend from her native Montreal, Jacques-Alexandre Paquet, the hotel’s general manager.

They then went to Bettolli’s condo before heading out for a walk to pick up some items at gourmet grocer Jacobsons.

Sophie – who describes herself on Instagram as a ‘friend, ally for equality, mental health author [and] loving mom’ – is due to head to Abu Dhabi next month to join fellow Canadian Shania Twain as a speaker at the Forbes 30/50 Summit.

In April, she is set to lead Closer Together – A Solar Eclipse Retreat at Bloom on Loughborough Lake in South Frontenac, Ontario.

On the retreat’s website, Sophie is described as ‘a certified yoga instructor as well as an intrepid outdoor sportswoman’.

Sophie’s book Closer Together will be published on April 23.

A description by publisher Penguin Random House Canada reads: ‘Drawing on her own mindfulness and yoga practices … Sophie inspires us to see that there are more things that bring us together than separate us, allowing us to stand in the light of our true potential’.

While it appears life is sweet for Sophie since her split from Justin, her new beau is battling his ex in court.

Bettolli and Remonda were teens when they started dating in October 1991 and tied the knot in December 1998 in Argentina.

The couple moved to Ottawa in July 2004 so Remonda could start a nine-month pastry program at Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Arts Institute.

‘Marcos initially intended to remain in Argentina, but discovered that he had better employment opportunities in Ottawa,’ Remonda claimed in her petition.

In his answer, though, Bettolli said he ‘gave up a lucrative career opportunity in Argentina to accommodate her wish’ and the move to Canada ‘significantly set back Marcos’s career path.’

Remonda, who has a diploma in hotel management, is described in her own court filing as ‘a stay-at-home mother with minimal passive income’ who had ‘a significant net worth’ when they married in 1998 thanks to an inheritance of between CA$4million and CA$5million in 1991.

Remonda claimed she supported Bettolli while he studied medicine and covered many of their family expenses, as well as the costs to build a new home.

But, he claimed ‘Ana did not support him financially prior to their marriage’ and blamed the depletion of her net worth on ‘mismanagement of her investments,’ including the loss of ‘a substantial amount of money in a Ponzi scheme’.

Bettolli added: ‘Ana is intentionally underemployed. At the age of 46 she is well capable of working and contributing to her own financial support and needs.’

None of the allegations in the filings have been proven in court. Lawyers on both sides have declined to comment.
