RKC Waalwijk had imagined a nicer end to a week of training camp. In Almelo, the team of coach Joseph Oosting went down: 4-1.
In the competition, RKC won two more times against the Almeloërs last season. Yet Heracles played it safe at an early stage and finished just in the left row, six places and fourteen points above relegation candidate RKC.
The Waalwijkers were certainly not the underlying party in the first half hour of the exhibition game. Except for a header by Orestis Kiomourtzoglou from a free kick by director Rai Vloet, the home team hardly created any danger in front of Joel Pereira’s goal. This time it was again the turn of the Portuguese to defend the RKC goal. After an interspersed drinking break, Heracles suddenly burst with energy. In the 34th minute, Bilal Basacikoglu coolly completed an assist from Vloet.
The same Vloet took advantage of a slip by Melle Meulensteen in the pouring rain in the second half. Due to the loss of the ball by the RKC captain, Schijndelaar had a free passage to Pereira’s goal: 2-0. From that moment on, Heracles played a won game. Oosting brought in four fresh employees at once, so it took a while to find the organization. Things got heated for a while by a number of hard tackles from the RKC side. Substitute Sebbe Augustijns got a yellow card. Heracles scored the 3-0 from the free kick. Again Vloet was at the base. This time he brought Orestis Kiomourtzoglou into position. Saïd Bakari, who moved from the right back position to the left wing in midfield due to all the substitutions, saved the Waalwijk honour. He took advantage of the second chance after Ilias Bel Hassani saw his bet turned on the line.
In the final phase, referee Dennis Higler sent the hotheads Quagliata and Gaari to the side, without drawing a red card. With ten against ten, Noah Fadiga made the defeat for RKC even more painful: 4-1.
Odgaard not match fit
Newcomer Jens Odgaard was missing from the Waalwijk selection. The Danish attacker is not yet match fit. Richard van der Venne skipped the practice match due to private circumstances.
Next Saturday, RKC will close the practice campaign with a home game against the Belgian first division team Lommel SK. It is the first home game with an audience for the Waalwijk Eredivisie club since September 13 last year, the opening game of the competition against Vitesse. After that, the gates were locked for season ticket holders due to the corona crisis.
