Rival Bouwmeester broken after blunder that puts gold at risk: ‘Difficult not to cry alone’ | Olympics

Just before the start, Rindom maneuvered her boat right next to Bouwmeester’s. With that, she blocked her opponent’s wind and the sailor received a warning. She had also been given a yellow flag yesterday and therefore thinks she has been disqualified. However, the rules are different at the Olympics, but she won’t find out until she has left the battlefield long and wide with her boat. Crying, she sees Bouwmeester approaching her to seven points and her certain gold medal being put on the line again in the medal race.

“Tears rolled down my cheeks,” Rindom told the Danish Ekstrabladet. “I couldn’t control my thoughts anymore.” The 30-year-old sailor explains that she feared she would be completely disqualified if she went sailing and that the disqualification would not only apply to the tenth race, in which scenario she could immediately forget her gold medal.

But her thinking was wrong and Rindom knows it all too well. “I’m still totally shocked by what I’ve done. I didn’t know what I was doing anymore and that’s tough. I’ve worked so hard for this over the years. And then the errors come on this day. It shows that I am only human.”

The winner of the bronze medal from five years ago in Rio says she is mentally broken after her mistake today. But she remains combative: ,,There is everything to fight for, but it is difficult to deal with all my feelings, after I threw away such a big lead. I still don’t understand it at all.”

Bouwmeester had already reacted to the striking incident: ,,I already had my ideal starting spot, I feel comfortable there. She always comes at the last minute and made it very tight. I thought: I’m going to make a lot of noise and create chaos, that’s when people get upset. An expensive mistake on her part.”

The standings after the tenth race:
1. Anne-Marie Rindom (Denmark) 64 points
2. Marit Bouwmeester (Netherlands) 71 points
3. Emma Plasschaert (Belgium) 79 points
4. Josefin Olsson (Sweden) 82 points
5. Silvia Zennaro (Italy) 83 points
