Netflix series: Ricky Gervais revealed that people have been telling him about their losses while promoting After Life on Tuesday on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

‘Like people would come up to me after the first season, people would come up to me on the street and say, “Oh, I lost my brother the week before. “I lost my partner,” “I lost my mother”’ Ricky revealed.

‘You sort of realize that everyone was grieving,’ he added. ‘I thought I should just treat that with respect and that’s why he doesn’t just snap out of it.’

Ricky said it was a dark subject but that people like seeing something of themselves on TV that they hadn’t seen before.

He said the response has been lovely and that has been the best thing for him. Ricky said despite the fact that the show is about a man who lost his wife that it is also an uplifting comedy.

‘It asked the big question: if you lose everything, is life still worth living?,’ said Ricky. ‘And the answer is yes. You just have to find something to do.’

He said his character realizes that his real superpower was kindness and that he could help others. He said since the show came out that a charity has sponsored to put benches of hope inspired by the show around the country.

Ricky also played a game with Jimmy that was called ‘Ricky Gervais Settles It.’ Jimmy started the game by asking him ‘Should You Take Videos During Concerts?’ and Ricky said no.

‘You’ve gone to see someone live, watch it live,’ Ricky said.

Jimmy then asked him ‘Who was the best James Bond’ and Ricky said, ‘Well, my first thought was Sean Connery.’ He then said that he wasn’t a big fan of the Bond films and that he had only watched a couple. He then added that it was all this putting on suits and dry martinis.

‘I don’t look good in a suit,’ Ricky said. ‘I look rubbish in everything.’

Jimmy then asked ‘text or call?’ and Ricky said it depends. Jimmy asked him what about audio texts and he said no that he would just leave it on and they would end up getting a message of him slagging the person off. He said he was very nervous about that and that texts were safer.

Jimmy then asked him ‘what’s scarier: space or the ocean?’ He said again that it depends.

‘If you were in a boat, space would be a lot scarier wouldn’t it,’ Ricky said. He said though that he thought space was a lot scarier in general because it was ‘miles and miles of nothingness.’

‘At least the ocean, you might see a lighthouse or a dolphin might save you,’ Ricky said. He said Flipper might come along. He then asked what if you meet the ‘Charles Manson of dolphins’ and he doesn’t save you? In the end, he still decided that space was scarier.

Jimmy asked him ‘Who was the best Beatle?’

‘I’m going to say one of the ones that are alive in case they are watching,’ said Ricky. He said he liked Paul McCartney. He said he saw the documentary on the Beatles and that Paul seemed ‘to be running the show.’ He said he also liked Paul’s frog song.

Jimmy asked him ‘if you had to be a cannibal who would you eat?’ Ricky said he was vegan so this was even worse for him. Jimmy asked him what if he ate Paul McCartney because he was vegan. Ricky said it didn’t make sense to eat another vegan ‘because you are still eating meat.’ Jimmy said he couldn’t believe he wouldn’t eat Paul McCartney because he was a legend. Ricky said he would rather not eat anyone.

‘Where would you start?’ Ricky asked.

Ricky said he wanted to be fed to the lions at the London Zoo when he died.

‘Just thrown in naked when I’m dead and then have people go ”Is that the bloke from The Office being eaten by lions?”’

Jimmy’s last question was ‘British or American Office?’

‘I thought the British Office was the best, but my accountant assures me that it’s the American,’ Ricky replied.

The third and final season of After Life premiered on Netflix  on January 14.

American best: 'I thought the British Office was the best, but my accountant assures me that it's the American,' Ricky replied when asked about the critically acclaimed TV comedy
