The Nintendo Switch 2 release date has been speculated on time and again, but it looks like the majority of industry experts have settled on March 2025. That’s a bit later than the 2024 dates in everyone’s mouth last year. According to Nikkei, the reason for this apparent delay is Nintendo’s desire to avoid any sort of hardware shortage at launch similar to Sony with the PS5. Hence the decision was made to delay the release of the console in order to build additional stock. Nikkei noted that further delays could happen in case those reserves aren’t ready in time.
While game developers working on launch titles for the Switch 2 will have to wait longer until the projects bear fruit, this delay affords them additional development time and may lead to games that are better polished or have more content than initially planned – which would be a boon for players. It may also allow Nintendo to field a larger library of launch titles, the lack of which has been a criticism for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Switch 2 will reportedly not shake up the fundamentals. Nintendo
According to Nikkei, the Switch 2 will have a larger screen size than the current standard model, which is equipped with a screen of 6.2 inches in size. The Switch OLED has a screen size of 7 inches, the same as Valve’s standard model Steam Deck (with the OLED version coming in at 7.4 inches). Nintendo is reportedly not changing up the console’s core hybrid concept – and that is totally understandable, given the Switch’s immense popularity and commercial success.
The Nintendo Switch is close to 140 million lifetime sales after overtaking its hallowed ancestors, the Game Boy and Game Boy Colour, in 2022 and becoming the third best-selling console of all time. Only the PS5 and the Nintendo DS have been more successful when it comes to shipping units.
