A female rhino at the Wildlands Zoo in Emmen died after fleeing when she met a potential spouse as part of the zoo’s breeding program.
The male rhino limpopo was released into the savanna enclosure with two females for the first meeting. The first move on his side escaped one of the females, Elena.
The chase lasted about 15 minutes as Elena slipped and landed in the shallow pool. According to the zoo, she couldn’t get up, probably because she was exhausted.
‘Limpopo stayed close to her, so the zookeeper tried to seduce him. Unfortunately, this help was too late for Elena and she was already drowning, “the zoo said in a statement.
“There was no sign that this would happen,” veterinarian Job Stampel told local broadcaster RTV Drenthe.
The team is very upset, Stampel said. “We need to handle what happened. The keeper felt helpless in the presence of 2,000 kg of muscle and horns.
Limpopo were taken to the Wildlands to contribute to the zoo’s breeding program. It is not clear if he will be given a second chance.
