Carl Weathers’ cause of death has been revealed one week after the star passed away at the age of 76 just one week earlier.

In the death certificate obtained The Blast on Friday, The Rocky actor died of ‘atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease’ after suffering from the heart condition for years – with investigators labeling the manner of death as ‘natural.’

Weathers had passed away at his home located in Venice, California at 12:18a.m. on February 2, the outlet also reported.

Accoridng to the certificate, the late star’s son, Matthew, had contacted authorities over his father’s death.

Last week on Friday, the shock news of Carl’s death was revealed, with his family releasing an emotional statement where they called him an ‘exceptional human being.’

According to Mayo Clinic, ‘Arteriosclerosis occurs when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body (arteries) become thick and stiff – sometimes restricting blood flow to the organs and tissues.’

It is also ‘the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls. This buildup is called plaque.’

‘The plaque can cause arteries to narrow, blocking blood flow. The plaque can also burst, leading to a blood clot.’

The revelation of Carl’s cause of death comes shortly after the later actor’s Super Bowl ad was altered in the wake of his passing.

Before he died, he filmed a Super Bowl commercial with football legend Rob Gronkowski for the gambling company FanDuel.

The firm confirmed to People that they are making changes to the promo in order to demonstrate their ‘respect’ as his family cope with their loss.

‘We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Weathers, Throughout his life, Carl was an iconic talent who had a profound impact on the people he worked with on and off the screen,’ said the FanDuel statement.

‘FanDuel was fortunate to have had an opportunity to work with him during our Super Bowl campaign,’ the brand continued. ‘We are adjusting our campaign accordingly out of respect for the family during their time of grief.’

In a sneak peek for the ad released three weeks ago, Gronkowski is seen trudging through the desert in his NFL uniform, having grown a matted mane and beard.

Filled with regret for missing out on a betting opportunity during last year’s Super Bowl, he resolves to visit ‘the land of second chances – Vegas.’

‘And this time, you won’t miss,’ Weathers says, pulling up beside him on a motorcycle and welcoming Gronkowski into his sidecar. ‘Get in.’

Last week, Carl’s family released a statement to reveal that the actor had passed away ‘peacefully in his sleep.’

They said, ‘We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024.’

‘Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations.’

‘He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.’

Creed gave ‘Italian Stallion’ underdog Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) his shot at the title in the iconic film.

And he reprised his role in 1979’s Rocky II in which Creed had a title rematch with Rocky, 1982’s Rocky III in which he faced off with Clubber Lang (Mr.T) and 1984’s Rocky IV – which saw his character killed in the ring by Russian heavyweight Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren).

His character also formed the crux of the storyline for acclaimed Rocky spin-off film series, Creed – which stars Michael B. Jordan as Apollo’s secret son and boxer Adonis Creed.

He is survived by sons Jason and Matthew who he shared with ex-wife Mary Ann Castle and his grandchildren.
