scotland to be hit by -4c arctic blast as snow charts show new whiteout

Friday February 16 will see temperatures in northern Scotland, particularly the central belt of Scotland and the Highlands, range between an icy -4C and -2C

The UK’s snow map shows more snow is coming next week, including rare freezing rain. Scotland will feel the chill from Wednesday, with temperatures possibly dropping to a frosty -4C.

Weather experts at WXCharts predict that on Friday, February 16, parts of northern Scotland could see temperatures between -4C and -2C. The south of Scotland and the north of England should also brace for cold snaps. Snow is expected to fall heavily in northern Scotland, including Inverness and Edinburgh.

The Met Office warns of “uncertain weather” ahead for the UK. They’ve issued a yellow warning for snow and ice, affecting areas from the Orkney Isles to Stirling, starting this evening until Saturday at 6pm, reports the Daily Mirror.

Another yellow snow warning started at midday Thursday and will last until Friday afternoon. It covers much of central Scotland and the Scottish Borders, and it stretches up north, joining the other alert.

Traffic Scotland announced on X, previously known as Twitter, that the Cairn o’Mount snow gates in Aberdeenshire are now closed. Meanwhile, Scotrail has stated on X that most services will run as usual, with changes only affecting its West Highland Line due to the weather. Calmac, the ferry operator, has reported several delays and cancellations because of the bad weather.

In contrast, the Met Office has lifted warnings in other parts of the UK, but flood warnings and alerts are still active in some areas. At present, 81 flood warnings have been issued, mainly in the South and Midlands, with a few in the North.

There are also 294 less severe flood alerts in England and 19 in Wales. Numerous schools in northern England and North Wales were shut on Thursday, and travel disruption was widespread throughout the day due to amber weather warnings.

Earlier, Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud reported that temperatures on Thursday morning dropped to a chilly minus 13.8C in Altnaharra, in the Scottish Highlands, while Exeter enjoyed a high of 13.6C later in the day.

He warned: “We’ve still got rain and many have snow making its way northwards, we have got further weather warnings in force. Temperatures are recovering a little, across the far south it’s generally mild. We’ve got a second band of cloud and rain moving northwards, it makes for challenging driving conditions. We’ve had the worst of it but it’s still not completely clear. Where we have falling snow we see there is a risk of a few icy patches on roads.”
