Respect at PSV for FC Utrecht: ‘We have been warned’

PSV coach Roger Schmidt expects to be able to call on more players in the home game against FC Utrecht on Saturday than last week in Heerenveen. Ice and return, Cody Gakpo, Jordan Teze and Noni Madueke rejoin the roster.

“We’ll see how they feel after Friday’s practice and then decide,” said Schmidt. “But they have now trained for a week.” Philipp Max is also close to a return, but will not start against FC Utrecht anyway. “He is returning from corona and unfortunately we have some experience with this kind of situation,” said Schmidt. ,,Philipp has not been able to participate in everything this week and we will see if it makes sense to include him in the selection, perhaps for a short substitute. We are happy to have him back.”

Whether Gakpo, Teze and Madueke can start against FC Utrecht? “We have to look at how we can bring them back in a good way for the last period of this calendar year,” Schmidt said. “Usually it takes a little more than a week, but it is also possible to regain content in matches.”

Zahavi and Thomas still gone

At PSV, Maxi Romero (striker), Vincent Müller (reserve goalkeeper) and Richard Ledezma (midfielder) are also training again. Romero is still active individually, after a groin problem. Ledezma can probably make his return to Jong PSV next week and Müller was only briefly ill. Only Ryan Thomas (after the winter break, knee injury) and Eran Zahavi (beginning of 2022) are out of training for the time being.

Schmidt spoke with respect on Friday about opponent FC Utrecht, of which PSV won no less than 26 times in a row at home in the Eredivisie. ,,They did well against the good teams in the competition and, for example, they beat Ajax and Feyenoord. That is why we have been warned. At the same time, we have achieved a good level in the past matches and if we do that again, we can finish this game with a win. Of course it was frustrating last Sunday that we didn’t win, because we deserved it. It is important not only to analyze the result, but also the underlying performance.”
