Sandeep Reddy Vanga says ‘If I had been aware of Ranbir Kapoor’s skill in action scenes, I would have made Animal more brutal’

Sandeep Reddy Vanga and Ranbir Kapoor collaborated for the first time for ‘Animal,’ which turned out to be a blockbuster hit at the box office, crossing more than Rs 900 crore worldwide. Apart from that, it was a topic of discussion among critics and viewers. Some of them found it too brutal, violent, and misogynistic. Now, the director himself stated that he could have made it more brutal if he had known earlier about Ranbir’s skill in action scenes.

In an interview with Galattaplus, Vanga talked about how he writes scripts without fixing the actor at the outset and how the writing process changes when he has already selected an actor for the role. While writing for an actor he intends to cast in the film, things become more voluntary. He knew about the capabilities of Ranbir and how he could pull off the scenes and dialogue delivery. So, it was easy for him to write a script tailored to his strengths.

However, while witnessing the scene in which Ranbir did the ‘alpha beta’ explanation part with gaze, pauses, and length, Sandeep was impressed and thought of making that scene more significant than initially planned. When the director usually writes two paragraphs for such important scenes, it becomes four if he is already writing for a particular established actor like Ranbir. Sandeep did not know that Ranbir had a unique talent for handling action scenes. If he had been aware of that, he would have made it more brutal.
